What is the benefit of using this?

I researched graphite vs teflon before purchasing this and couldn't find a good answer. I need the packing for my washing machine shut off valves. I tried the teflon, but it just would not seal, so I purchased the graphite. It stopped the leak. I noticed that the graphite was softer than the teflon and I believe that is why it created a better seal. It was soft enough to mold to the stem where the teflon was hard and did not seal properly.

For steam valves in old radiators, do you wind this around the stem, or on the threads of the nut that fits around the stem?

As best as I know, it was ALWAYS wound around the stem. Teflon tape on the nut and threads if you wish, but the packing seals in the water/steam/whatever.If you use so much packing that you can't thread the nut back on, you have used too much. Try a little less! Hope this helps, some ..... Lee
