and packing was excellent that this unit was over secured
The media could not be loaded. Feedback on 14-Aug-2016:This is the second QNAP NAS that I am owning. My first one was purchased over 5 years ago. It was TS-879-PRO (i3, 4GB ram, 8x3TB RAID 10) from Amazon, and it is still working; never ever failed or malfunctioned. The only maintenance I am doing is just cleaning the dust externally every 6 months (after shutting off the unit) using regular vacuum cleaner because I live in middle east which is dusty. I give TS-879-PRO more than 5 stars. Now, I purchased TVS-1282 (i7-6700, 32GB ram, 450W) with 8 Seagate Enterprise NAS HDDs model ST8000NE0001 (8TB, 7200RPM, 256MB cache). Both the old and new units are powered directly from 220V 50Hz power supply, and are connected to the same network of 1GB Ethernet speed. Each unit is connected to an Asus RT-AC5300 router (set as Access Point) that are connected to my home switch LINKSYS LGS528, which is connected to my home router SonicWall TZ-215W.The TVS-1282 unit is connected from its 2.0 HDMI (HDMI # 3) output to Yamaha AC5030 A/V Receiver using Fusion 2.0a 4k 18GB HDMI 3ft cable. The A/V Receiver is then connected to Samsung 4k TV using similar Fusion cable but of 6ft long. The following are my observations:1) Delivery was on time, unit was absolutely brand new, and packing was excellent that this unit was over secured. Note that I live in middle east, so this unit went first to NYC, then shipped to middle east by another shipment company. QNAP box arrived my home with no single scratch on it as an outer box was also provided.2) The Body of TVS-1282 is robust and attractive. I placed this unit in my living room. Body is always cold though room is not really cold, and no heat that I can feel with my hand coming from the fans, but just normal room temperature air. Strange! During normal operation, the unit is so quite that I cannot hear it running 4 meters (17 feet) away in an absolutely quite room. You can happily sleep just few feet away from it. You will only hear the processor fan / hard disk write operation running when the unit is under heavy task, but it is still very low (like a desktop). You cannot hear it if your TV is on.3) Setting was straight forward. After completing initial setup (such as setting IP address, RAID, time, and some applications), the unit immediately connected to the network with its new IP and started checking HDDs for bad sectors as I optionally selected that during this initial setup (which I recommend everyone to do if HDDs are new). Due to the high capacity of the HDDs, it took QNAP about 12 hours to check for bad sectors, and results were positive (no bad sectors).4) Once rebooted, sound was really clear announcing that reboot was completed.5) As with my 5-year-old QNAP, this one also never behave abnormally so far after using it for over 2 weeks. Using File Station, and opening an FTP connection from there to my old NAS, I let then TVS-1282 copies directly from my old server via the network. No issues.6) I use QNAP to backup OneDrive cloud storage accounts (daily, weekly, and monthly versions), store files (docs, xls, ppts, drawings, pdfs, etc.), store and watch all type of movies, video, and store and listen to audio files, and doing all these from home and across the internet.7) I use QNAP kodi app (aka XBMC previously) to play movies to TV via QNAP HDMI, and I really can see zero time waiting when playing details of a movie, and when scrolling between the thousands of movie posters. For best screen in kodi, Go to System>Setting>System>Video output then set ‘Monitor’ to HDMI 3 if you are conneting from this output, and set your TV to UHD color. I use ‘Sybu Kodi’ to control and navigate through the kodi in my old and new QNAPs, which is a free app for both iPhone and iPad, which is syncing automatically with QNAP and display all movie posters in your iPhone / iPad where then you can select any and once you click, you see it on TV immediately. That is, click and play, and jump to any scene with zero freezing, zero buffering, and zero distortion in the image.8) I was able to stream 4k and 2k movies smoothly to all our iPhones, one MacBook, one MacBook Pro, and iPads. No buffering at all. Thanks to Asus RT-AC5300 powerful signal. For streaming to my iPhone, I use ‘Infuse’ app which is the best application I found for streaming videos. For streaming to Macbooks, I use Kodi app.9) Using QNAP Qfile app in my iPhone, I easily send my Audio files and 4k home videos (recorded by gopro hero 4 black) to others in WhatsApp where it automatically compresses the video without losing clarity. Ironically, I have been searching for software to compress these 4k videos so I can send them via WhatsApp and failed to find good one, and it just happened that Qfile is doing this automatically!!10) I also use other Apps such as YouTube, and use QNAP Qremote app for iPhone which is far better than any keyboard or remote. I am not using QNAP remote controller because I hate to have many controllers at home.11) Linking to Server folders is super-fast with zero malfunction and almost no delay. I use QNAP Qfile app to link to QNAP shared folders from iPhones. I also link from my MackBook, MacBook Pro, and Sony Windows 10 PC with no issues at all. I also use SonicWall licensed VPN SSL to link to my QNAP (using SonicWall free app MobileConnect), and it is absolutely fast.12) I am using one 4TB portable Backup Plus drive set to back up my cloud having daily, weekly and monthly versions. Looks excellent. In summary, QNAP has really destroyed all other competitive NAS manufacturers by its superior reliability, variety of apps, and above all its HDMI output that puts it in first rank among 4k and 2k players (thanks to also kodi app) and media database. I personally tried many and many best-selling and most expensive 4k and 2k players (including those using kodi) in the market and they all never come even closer.I will give another feedback after sometime, like I did for my old QNAP.Both seller and QNAP deserve more than 5 Stars. I cannot give review on QNAP Customer Service because I have never needed them because never get failure since I purchased my first QNAP 5 years ago, and this one a week age. Also, QNAP official forums are full of help in case you need to setup or resolve something.Feedback on 03-Sep-2016:I just added the attached video that shows the noise level, and performance of playing large 2k and 4k high bit rate files. I intentionally made 4k movie sound quite so you can hear that no noise is produced from qnap when running such large files (50+ GB).I couldn't see any difference regarding the noise level of this qnap and my old TS-879 PRO. Both are quite. The unit is still behaving excellent and running smoothly and continuous since day 1.

Enterprise Class NAS for the price of a low-end PC - Top Notch Product!
I have been running my QNAP TVS-1282 for a few days now and have almost 2TB transferred over to it from my old Lenovo IX4-300D. I setup a Raid5 26.4TB thick drive pool (and I still have 2 3.5 drive bays, 4 SSD and 2 M2 drives open), and I have monthly snapshots configured. I got the entire thing configured within about an hour of unboxing it, it's amazing how easy they made it to get setup.I am impressed by how extremely quiet it really is (with three fans, plus the CPU fan) and how solid and well built it really is. Where I do agree with others is that the drive trays are somewhat cheap flimsy plastic and have no drive lock, but overall they do the trick and work (just be gentle with them). I already upgraded the memory to 64Gb (2666 speed) and it works amazing, next step is the processor from an I3 to an I7.Seriously though if you are considering a NAS for your home or small business, this is it, look no further. I did a lot of research first. I had a few virtual machines running both FreeNAS and OpenMediaServer and while both had some nice features and were very easy to get up and running, QNAP simply had both of them beat in features, functionality, hardware and options for the price. There are a lot of really great apps available for QNAP as well, not to mention the Mobile app support. One of my favorite apps is the Qmanager Mobile app. This app allows me to get every stat on my NAS from anywhere II may be (you may need a way to VPN into your home network). I can see CPU temp, Fan Speeds, Drive health, Resource Monitors, drive space by drive pool and folder, Background Tasks, Privilege Settings and the list goes on.Well - As much as I wish they would pay me for this review or send me an external NAS drive bay, I don't think I will get anything from them for writing this review. But I can say that without a doubt I am overly impressed with this NAS, its capabilities, speed, design and functionality. Oh and the packaging was also amazing, the thing could have been drop-kicked all the way to my house and I doubt it would have had a single dent. They package it very well so no harm will come to it during shipping!A little on the spendy side, but at this point I would say worth every penny I spent!
