Becomes noisy after a short time
I ordered this pump as a replacement for an aqua scape pro pump as it is a perfect fit with the Aqua scape flow valve . I have been very happy with the performance in terms of volume of water moved and it works well as a waterfall pump . Unfortunately after only eight months of usage it has become very noisy with avery loud internal scraping grinding noise . I even changed the oil as per the Matala website suggestion for longevity. Yes it is still running but I do not think that it could run long in this manner so I even ordered a backup just in case as I can't afford a pump failure the middle of summer. My other criticism of this pump is the fact that the cast-iron end plates shown signs of significant rusting in only eight months . So while it appears to be a better product than the horrible Aqua scape pump it clearly needs design improvement .

Replaced Aquascape pump
Recently moved into a home that has a large pond, and found the Aquascape pump for the pond in the Garage. After I installed it, it would randomly stop moving water -- it would try to cycle but stop due to (presumably) thermal overload. Unplugging and removing the pump, forcing it to spin a few times by hand, reinstalling it would make it work for a few more hours... This is not a small, easy to install pump. Since there are many waterlife (frogs, fish, plants) I did not want to just "oil it". So, after some research, discovered that this Matala pump is a direct replacement with some fairly good reviews across the net. I will tell you its quiet and it moves a lot of water -- by my calculations, it circulates the entirety of the pond water 2 minutes. Its been running since mid-August 2013 without interruption. I hope to get at least 5 years out of it.

Quiet Direct Replacement for crappy Aquascape Pump
I went looking for a direct replacement for my 2nd failed Aquascape pump. New Aquascape pumps are pricey and only last 2 seasons. The 2" outlet fit my pipe fittings exactly and was painless to make the switch. This Matala pump was very quiet. It did seem a little wimpy on flow, so you might want to use a bigger one, just make sure you measure your skimmer box width, each size larger is wider than the next. Hopefully, it will last 5 seasons, not 2, but at this price, won't be as bad as an Aquascape failure for cost. One note, the filter cage on one end of the motor may cause some to have to move the pipe hole in your skimmer to make it work. Mine bent enough so I could get the fitting screwed on.6 Jan 2013 update: Still working good and cleans much easier than the old one.

Bought one in 2015 and it lasted over 6 years. Just ordered another one.
Great pump...great quality...Price excellent. Local pond supply place had one that would match this one but different brand. It cost +$600.00. Stuck with this brand...very satisfied.

The pump works great..
Cautious on this one. The pump works great ... when it works. I bought the first one 9 months earlier. Worked great for 9 months, then just stopped. For the cost of these, I would've expected it to work longer. The company took the old pump back and refunded my money, but when I repurchased, the price had gone up significantly. Hope this one works longer.

Effective; limited life expectancy
I use two pumps for a waterfall feature in yard. Pumps move the water the way I want. However, since I put in the water feature in 2010, I have had to replace one or the other pump at least 6 times. Life expectancy for the pump just exceeds the warranty.

These pumps are great
They last super long (years) and never have an issue. I will always buy Matala

It has been noisy and sounding like it was going to quit for at least two ...
I ordered this in April of 2012 and it died today. It has been noisy and sounding like it was going to quit for at least two years. It is cheaper than the original for my pond but it is not the same quality.. I may have to reorder if I can't find the original pump, replacemnt hopefully not.
