Loved it!
The imaginative and magical instances in the book make you jump up and about as you read every chapter. I bought this one for my favourite eight-year-old. The author creates such creative characters and a storyline that it makes the book stand out from the glut of sickly sweet bedtime books. Lovely rhythm and if you enjoy emoting characters to children then this is the book for you. It makes for a charming bedtime book and it is hysterically funny.

A fun book for a glum life
A fantastic little book, full to the brim with magic, fun quirky characters, and a world that seems at once both new and yet familiar. The design of the book, especially the illustrations, is doing something new and unexpected in every chapter. Overall, the book is not glum even for a second and is a creative cauldron of fun, thoughtful and lovely ideas, put together beautifully.

A zany magical adventure; a must read
The disgusting brown stew looked revolting, and the insects crawling in it made Tootoolu retch. She had seen Boju tip mugfuls of toilet water into the bowl, and she was not sure she wanted to eat it. Still, she raised a quivering spoonful to her reluctant mouth, ready to swallow the foul-smelling concoction, retching violently again as she bit into the beetle she had not seen in the murky brown liquid with a sickening crunch. The Very Glum Life of Tootoolu Toop is a magic-infested, hilarious adventure high up in the hills of Darjeeling, with an added bonus mystery. When Tootoolu decides to become a glum, will her life go horribly wrong, or will it retain the shine and sparkle she expects it to, what with the glum com-pu-ters and tech-no-logy? Well, it's begun with a bad enough start, what with the bug soup and the strange hidden secrets in Boju's cottage, and Ketta seems to know something's off. But what is it? Tootoolu can only know with the help of grandma and Soosoo, her "stuffling" bear. The Very Glum Life of Tootoolu Toop is a fun romp through the world of hidden away magic in the mountains of Darjeeling, filled with the potent uniqueness and authenticity of someone who has hailed from Darjeeling themselves. It's a great book, well written, too, and a recommend from me. My compliments to the chef. (Not for the bug-and-toilet-water stew, though)
