Even Venerated Aces Can Break....And Do!
This book is a must read for anyone interested in military aviation. It was written by one of the air force's leading ace fighter pilots, Colonel Walker "Bud" Mahurin. The author provides insight from the perspective of "I was there." He describes his early years and his career as a fighter pilot in everything from the P-47 to the F-86. This celebrated ace served in both theaters of conflict during WW 2, the PTO and ETO. Later he served in Korea, and was forced down and captured during the Korean war. He describes the torture he endured, then under that torture, broke, and falsely confessed to the US being engaged in germ warfare during that conflict. Later, many Americans held that act against him as an act of treason....but then it was not they who suffered such barbaric acts of creulty by members of a thug nation. Bud was the only American ace to shoot down enemy aircraft in all three areas of combat. Many years ago someone asked, "Where do we get such men?" Where, indeed!
