No, it is not heat resistant. And as you have already discovered, neither is butter, so we recommend you keep both off a hot stove ;)

Q: Does the lid snap in place? Or does it just sit on top of the bottom?

It just sits. There is a groove on either end, between the handle and the place you put the butter. The lid stays on well, unless you turn it upside down.
