Is it made of real animal leather? Yes or no, what exactly is conductive leather?

The mat is made of a synthetic leather. No animal leather is used in the production.

can you plug this into a rod that goes into the ground as well rather than a socket?

Yes, you can attach the cord to a grounding rod instead of the socket.

I tried sleeping with this grounding mat and it has caused me to wake up with severe headaches. I am curious what may be causing this issue?

Grounding mats don't "cause" anything like that! Picture yourself sleeping outside while camping...orr at the beach. You can be grounded for life, it's definitely not detrimental to your health! I would say it might be the husband causing those headaches. Try removing him first before you take away the mat!
