Q: how much would i need for 1200sqft of wire mash

It would be determined by which length and width roll you purchase. Mine was 48”(4 feet) by 100 feet long. 4X100=400 square feet. 1200 sq. ft would take 3 rolls of 48”x100’

Q: Is the 23 gage heavy enough to be predator proof?

In my experience over the last 3 months, yes; but I do not know how it will weather over time - particularly the portion that is buried. This is my experience: I attached it to an enclosed 1/4 acre sheep and goat fence with about 12 inches folded away from the fence and covered with dirt (to protect from mice or other critters that might attempt to dig under the fence). I am out in the desert where I hear or sometimes see free range cattle, pronghorn deer, coyote, javelina, fox, rabbit, rats and mice - but the larger animals are kept out by an additional 8 foot fence. I purchased the hardware cloth to protect seedlings in my vegetable garden against little critters and it works for that purpose. With the exception of some mice and a rat that were trapped in the garden when I completed it (I had to dispose of those), I am not aware of any animals going in or out - not even snakes. All this to say I find the hardware cloth helpful to protect seedlings out in the desert. Is it heavy enough? That is an issue for longevity, which I can't speak to; also installation, which I can: I was glad it was light with respect to affixing it to the existing fence in such a way that I could fold out the bottom 12 inches - 100 feet was workable for me and the gloves that come with it are very helpful. At one point when I stretched it a bit too hard, it tore.
