dieci e lode a Andrew Thornton

Meticulous and compelling.
An outstanding (and weighty) compilation of stories about hundreds of the individuals who served Coldstream Guards from 1720, right through to the 1950s. At 550 pages this is impressive, and staggeringly good value, with half of the book dedicated to pre Boer War, and a large part connected to the First World War. Thornton is to be commended on his meticulous research and keen eye for choosing compelling stories. This is not a dusty matter-of-fact history, but instead, a dip in-and-in out collection, offering a glimpse into the day-to-day lives of the men who served (and many of whom gave their lives) in all the most important conflicts of the past 300 years. I've only scratched the surface so far, but already am keen to find out even more about some of these men. I think I'll be busy for a good few months...

A superb book- I cannot recommend it too highly
A superb book- I cannot recommend it too highly. Culled from letters, obscure local newspapers, and Soldiers records, many of which have not been seen before, or not for a long time, this is military social history at its best.Even if you aren`t that interested in The Coldstream Guards, this is a fascinating read.In fact, it is Second To None !

Skilfully Researched and Compiled
A well written and interesting account of the Coldstream Guards between 1720 and 1950. This is not a Regimental History but a compilation of articles and letters written by some of those who served with the Regiment, skilfully researched and compiled by the author. Well Done.
