Incredible book. Very intense. For older children.
This is an incredibly moving book. Very well written. It is also very very intense. I (adult) had to take several breaks to cry and sit with my feelings.I bought it for my 9yo and have not given it to her. Incredible book, but I feel like it’s for a much older age.

Amazing book!
This book is so amazingly written. It gives you a great look and perspective into how things were after and before the partition of India. It gives such exquisite details and portrays the situations as they were. The hardships and the joy. It is a great book that makes you cry and laugh. I don’t normally order books like this but this was definitely a great book which I will be recommending to any and everyone!

Recommended for the Middle Graders
The Night Diary by @veerawrites is a middle grade book, that describes the year, 1947. Where bells of happiness rang because of Independence, sadness was accompanied with partition.Nisha, a 12yr old hindu, who lived in the now Pakistan part has to move to the now India part, because partition led to riots between the Hindu and the Muslims. With her father, brother and grandmother, she embarks ok this dangerous journey. She ends up learning various lessons for life and growing in her own silence. This book is dedicated to her late muslim mother, in the form of her diary entries. Torn between life and death, she talks to her mother and diary while remaining silent to the entire world. The writing style was good. There were minor errors, which may be the author kept unchanged because it was an informal diary entry. It describes the struggles and hardships that a young heart faced and many others. The fear, grief, uncertainty and love of a daughter was seen with all incidents. And there was a mention of a lot of food. Though it was a breezy read, I felt it was a little drag and I was expecting more from it.Overall for the Middle graders, it is a beautiful read. I would recommend it to only that age group.

#PartitionStories
Some books just sear for themselves a place in your heart. #TheNightDiary by Veera Hiranandani is one such.An #epistolary #YA #HistoricalFiction written at the time of the #PartitionofIndia. It's the story of 12 year old Nisha and her family and their journey to India post partition.Kazi, their cook, gifts a journal to Nisha and she uses it to write letters to her mother, who died while giving birth to her and her twin Amil. And this writing is important to her, because Nisha doesn't voice her words much. The complex family equations are rolled out beautifully in the book.I have never read a book that is such a vivid and exhilarating sensory experience. The author tingles each of our senses through her descriptive chronicles.Cooking is what Nisha finds solace in and the book abounds in instances of her working in the kitchen. Her favourite dish is the #Sindhi #Saibhaji. I had never heard of this dish before and initially thought the spelling might be a typo. I searched for the recipe and came across one in @ranveer.brar 's show #MaaKiBaat. The Sindhi lady who cooks the dish explains that 'Sai' means green in Sindhi. This yummy dish is loaded with green goodness. It's truly #ComfortFoodPublisher -Penguin IndiaMy RatingFor the Book-5⭐For the bhaji-4⭐

A must read.
This is a book we all need to read! A girl who mourns the loss of her mother and deals with partition. She is bright and cheerful and all that is taken away when they decide to cross the boarders by foot. From her innocent eyes, we see how difficult it was. She has to leave her friends and her home, her comfort zone. My heart broke!
