Hi, No the Transformer should not work like that. The over heating could be due the item of equipment it is suppling power to having a higher Watt then 500 Watt which is the limit of the Transformer.. If this is so or the Watts of of the equipment are close to 500 Watts you need a Step down Transformer of much higher Watts capacity may be double the Watts of you equipment. The terrible smell is the Transformer burning up inside. Please do not continue using it.

I'd say yes it could run without issue for 12 hours. It does not involve the heavy currents of an arc welder which will have a duty cycle of minutes rather than hours in some cases. The unit I purchased was to run the heating element of a water bed, so is switched on 24/7. Naturally the element, being thermostatically controlled, it doesn't continually draw current, but will for extended periods in cold weather. The element is rated at 300w and the transformer puts out 500w, that's what is important.
