MSR WindBurner Coffee Press Kit

IT MAKES A MESS! NOT RECOMMENDED
I love the Windburner and I love coffee, so I thought this product from MSR was a great idea...and it is, but in real world functionality, it's just a total mess. I just bought this thing for Christmas but couldn't hold back; I just had to try it. I used it in textbook fashion, but when I was done, there were a lot of grounds in my coffee, grounds in between the plastic fins on the sides of the press and tons of grounds in the Windburner...smeared streaked grounds. Every time I've tried it, same results. It makes coffee with grounds, and leaves the Windburner a mess and the press a mess, so cleanup is extensive. You want to know what works flawlessly and is easy to clean up? The Aeropress. I should have just stuck with what I know works. I'm getting a refund. If you want simple good coffee with no grounds and easy cleanup, this isn't what you want. Please heed my warning because I seldome write Amazon reviews.

Works great, just be careful with the aluminum rod
I really love my Windburner stove, and I kinda wished this would have come with the stove, but MSR's products are generally 5 star equipment, so I was willing to spend the $19 to get the press. The parts are very well made, either aluminum or sturdy plastic. The press nests easily with the stove, so it doesn't add any more space than the stove would normally take up in your gear. For my test, I filled up the pot to the max fill line (20 oz) and heated the water until it was just about to boil. I used regular ground Folgers coffee, which is a normal size grind. I used three heaping tablespoons of coffee. Gave it a nice stir, and let it sit for about 2 min. The press worked pretty well. There were about 2-3 grinds floating in my coffee cup after I poured it from the Windburner pot. No coffee press is perfect, so I can live with this. The coffee was very good. Cleaning up any coffee press is usually not a fun task. Here's my only complaint, or maybe warning - be careful with the aluminum rod when you are pulling the press back up. You'd be wise to give the windburner pot time to cool after ALL THE COFFEE has been poured out. If you do that, you'll be fine. I was concentrating so hard on making sure not to touch any metal part of the windburner pot, I forgot about the aluminum rod on the press. You can't remove the lid on the pot until you pull the press up first. Make sure you only pull on the red plastic grip at the top of the rod. The hot coffee heats the aluminum rod to the point where you can get a mild burn if you try to pull the press up by gripping the aluminum rod instead of the red plastic cap. Other than this issue (which is avoidable), it's a great product.

Gets the job done. Pretty good
Gets the job done. Lighter than packing a separate french press. In my experience some grounds will get in the coffee but obv way less than cowboy coffee so for me it's still worth bringing. My biggest annoyance is with the smallest fuel canister stored in my 1L Windburner just juuuust barely doesn't fit with the lid. Seriously if the pot was like 1/4" taller it would be perfect. Not a huge deal because the lid does kinda fit on there it just pops off really easily. But when I'm backpacking my pack is stuffed tight so it's not like it's going anywhere. Car camping is a different story. But when car camping I just bring the Windburner and a separate french press .

Does the job but not a tool for a coffee snob
Works fine and stores well in the bottom of the stove. Don't know why MSR went to plastic stem -- the smaller version comes with a metal one. Some coffee grinds make it through the plunger. I don't mind the grinds--especially not in the wild--but it could definitely be engineered better.

Does what it needs to do - nothing more
Perfect companion for the MSR Windburner kit - fits right inside the Windburns typical storage footprint. Its maybe not as tight of a seal as the Coleman coffee press kit- but does the job. You will get a few granules of coffee through- but nothing to ruin your morning. If you are going light weight and doing multi-day excursions this is the ticket for sure.

Great addition to MSR Windburner
I am super stoked to add this to my windburner. The construction feels just a tad flimsy, so I have concerns about durability. I tend to be pretty careful with my gear, so I don't foresee any problems, but I can just tell that this will need to be babied in order to make it last (that's my impression - time will tell).

coffe press kit.
I got it Saturday. And assembled it. And filled it with grinded coffee. I used it with an old JETBOIL propane can that I have some fuel left inside. And the coffee I made, tastes as it came out of a percolator. Great stuff. And as always MOUNTAIN SAFETY RESEARCH (MSR) makes great gear.

Good item
It works just like high-quality coffee or tea maker but in the camping form I enjoyed mine many many times with my friends very easy to make coffee or tea .

Great fresh coffee on the go
This coffee press is the best I have used in an outdoor cook set, it fits the mug very well I use the 1ltr pot. It presses the grinds well and there is very little grinds end up in the cup no more than a good quality French press. I did find that it packs down well and fits inside the windburner fins and then the filter goes over the base of the pot before putting the bowl on to keep everything together. Highly recommend this pot and this seller fast dispatch well packed and good comms. Top notch product.

Not cheap but ideal for lovers of real coffee
I love my coffee and now i can still enjoy the good stuff while camping. Makes a nice brew and seems well made.

Does the Job
Does the job it's meant to - and packs away within the existing stove, which reduces the likelihood of losing it, or forgetting to bring it along on a trip. It seems a little bit expensive given it's a fairly basic metal rod with a plastic/mesh strainer, but outdoor kit doesn't tend to come cheap, and I wasn't complaining when I used it to make fresh ground coffee from the comfort of my sleeping bag the other week!
