Will the 24-volt battery on this work on an older Kobalt drill that uses the 18-volt battery?

No, the connections are different. you'll also end up burning up the 18v drill

How many years from now will Kobalt stop making batteries to fit this drill, as all companies do to force purchase of new dills?

Hard to say. In the year 2000 I purchased a Black Decker Firestorm drill kit with two batteries and a charger for my late father, as a Father's Day gift. After he passed away, a few months later, I bought it back from his estate for almost the same price as what I originally paid for it. After almost 22 years the two included nickel cadmium battery packs died and took the charger with them. The included charger broke when I tried to charge the bad batteries forcing me to purchase a new charger. I just purchased a better charger and a nickel metal hydride battery pack on Amazon and it works great in the almost 22 year-old drill because it doesn't have the memory problem of nickel cadmium batteries. The batteries can usually be rebuilt, but I chose not to do that because I could still get better batteries and a better charger for less money, usually aftermarket. The manufacturers will stop making replacement batteries when they stop getting a significant return on their investment. There are all kinds of formulas and Calculus involved in that decision making process. They won't give you any notice of that. The Chinese are your friends.

Can you use regular drill bits with it or do they have to be those Kobalt bits with the oversized ends?
