Great for stairway or nursery
Just so you know there are two different lights, a very soft night light and an LED light that turns on either pointing up or down, depending on which way you plug it in. I leave it with the LED lights pointing down on "Auto" so it lights up the floor, and I turn the night light to "Off". I had one previously that had 2 of the 3 led lights go out after a few years, so I ordered another to replace my first one. Since my first did lose a couple of LED's, I rated it down to 4 stars, but I really am happy enough to order it again, so I do recommend it.I use this for my stairway, but I turn off the night light and only use the motion activated light that points down on "Auto", so the light only comes on when I walk into the hallway where my stairs are,so it lights up the walk down the stairs as I enter the room. No more stumbling down the stairs in the dark, or turning on the lights only to be blinded by all the hallway lights. I leave the area and it shuts off a short time later. Great if you also have others in the house and you don't want to light up the house when you just need enought light to get down the stairs (or hallway) safely. No more stubbed toes either. So, I have now ordered three of these, as my daughter saw mine and thought it would be great for her newborn and the nursery, so I gave her mine and got another. Since our family never use night lights even for kids she uses it just like I use it for the stairs, she turns off the night light option, but leaves the motion sensor light on "Auto" which means they can go into the nursery when they need a diaper change and the light senses her movement and turns on the soft LED light with just enough soft light to do your thing and then put down the baby, and leave the room and the light goes off. Nice!Of course, for those of you who like night lights, you can leave the soft night light also on "Auto" and have it come on at dark and turn off in light, but I hate night lights, so not my thing. But if you are afraid of monsters because you were raised to have a night light, then just use that option so the boggie-man doesn't get you or your family members! lol.

One Was a Dud--The Next 3 Worked Fine
Revised Review (4 stars): After my first very negative review, I looked over the possible substitutes at Amazon, didn't see one I wanted, and decided to order another of these. It worked just fine. Nightlight is always on, but at a low level in the daytime. At night it gets brighter, and when the motion sensor detects motion, the nightlight gets brighter and the three-bulb LED "flashlight" portion comes on and illuminates a good part of the nearby floor or wall. Unplugging the unit lets you walk around with the "flashlight." I then ordered two more units, and all three have been working fine for the last few days. So be prepared for poor QC on these lights. The good news is that Amazon lets you return a defective one free of charge (via a UPS "will-call" ticket) and promptly credits your account for the return. If you don't mind hit or miss QC, the unit is a good value.______________________________First (Older) Review (1 star):I purchased one of these on 1/28/10. Set both the flashlight and nightlight switches to "Auto" and plugged it into the wall. With the switch for the flashlight on "Auto," the flashlight portion stayed on all the time. Unplugging the unit from the wall made no difference. [So it does NOT function as an "emergency light."] Then, as far as the nightlight was concerned, the sensor failed to operate at all, so the nighlight (in "Auto mode") just stayed on 24 hrs. a day.In short, a total failure. Well, not quite total--it does make a nice "always on" nightlight (if that's what you want), and a good flashlight then you manually place the light switch in the "on" or "Auto" position. :-)Plus it's much smaller than it appears in the stock photo. (See my user photo above.)Try something else, folks!

Best night/emergency power failure lite ever
Great little light. Features are right on. What I like best is that it has replaceable AA NiMh batteries which I have not had to replace in probably 10 years. Over the years I have gone thru many night/ emergency lights. This one lasts a long time.

We have these all over our house
I first started using the Datexx Sentina Emergency Smart Light a few years ago, and they were so convenient and useful that we later bought a few more. Now, we have about six of them placed strategically in various parts of the house. We have also bought and used similar products from other companies, but this one remains the best. The only exception is the AmerTac 73092, which we use in our bathrooms. They are proximity/brightness-based sensors that only turns on when it's dark and there's motion, and turns itself off after one minute, which is great for just stepping into the bathroom to wash your hands or to do number two. Because some bathrooms have no windows and it perpetually dark until you turn the light switch on, the AmerTac 73092 is better since it won't stay on all the time due to the darkness. In other areas of the house, the Datexx Sentina is perfect. I love that it can be used as a flashlight during power outages (we've used them during a prolonged power outage once and it worked perfectly), and the proximity sensor is great for lighting your way around the house without having to turn on and off lights. We've placed them at all the major junctions and hallways in our home, so I can walk around the whole house at night and not have to turn on a single light. I also find it to be a nice traveling companion. You can use them at wherever you're staying at and help light your way at night in unfamiliar environments, and can double as an emergency flashlight.

Too many options; not enough control
UPDATE: Returned. Stopped working. In "auto mode" it started turning back on again as soon as the motion detector timed out. In other words it would go on for a minute, turn off and then go right back on -- and repeat, forever. So it broke and we returned it (luckily on the last possible day!). Read on for my earlier review of why I didn't like the design in the first place, even before it broke...The instructions for this light are minimal, so it's possible that I'm missing something, but it seems to me that there aren't enough controls to take advantage of the possibilities. We bought this mainly for the power outage feature -- we are off-grid and our inverters are not in hearing range of our sleeping area. So we plugged in this light, hoping that it would give us a warning when our power goes out at night (we are raising baby chicks in winter, and if the power goes down we need to go out and turn on the generator so they stay warm enough through the night). The light does go on if the power trips off, but the problem is that as far as I can tell, you can't turn on the power outage feature without the motion detector feature. So to use it for a power outage warning means that every time anyone (or a pet) moves, the light comes on. We don't want to be woken up unless there is a power outage. Also, the light doesn't come on unless it's dark, but that includes low light. So in the late afternoon the motion detector keeps turning the light on.I can't figure out if there is a way to have the power outage feature work without having the night light on, and without having the motion detector on. As a result, it's not very useful to us. We unplug it to avoid the annoyance of the motion detector light, and then have to remember to plug it in and set it properly when we go to bed for a power outage warning -- we were really hoping for a 24/7 set-it-and-forget-it power outage warning light...
