You do wish them to be tight. A loose fit negates the dampening. Sometimes you need to find your "angle" or pull on the ear upwards to achieve fit. If you feel uncomfortable pressure you may wish to downgrade the sizing, but keep in mind, it is the compression of the rubber in the ear canal that achieves the defensive blockage.
