I Went Down the Rabbit Hole and I'm Glad I Did
This album blew me away and, coming from someone who dabbles in just about every genre of electronic music, yet shies away from trap and most bass music subgenres, that's saying a lot. If you read no further into this review, just take the plunge and buy this album. With its outstanding production value, clear flow, and a mess of memorable tracks, you won't be disappointed.I was drawn into Alison Wonderland and her work as a DJ first, through countless binge-watching sessions on MixMag's YouTube channel. Mesmerized by this small, blonde, Aussie chick with command over huge and bassy sounds, I wanted more. So I did what anybody else would do and followed her on just about every form of social media she was on and waited for new tracks and mixes to arrive.Right about that time, Run was scheduled to be released and the music videos started coming out. And the second I saw the video for "U Don't Know," her collaborate with Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, it was like that first time all over again. That's all I needed to order this whole album.I'm the kind of guy who would rather own a physical copy of my music than trust in the digital download game. Without going into details, Beatport burned me hard on about a grand's worth of digital music that I lost when my backup drive crashed catastrophically and I never recovered it, so I make a point of buying my music on either vinyl or CD when I can. For everything else, I'll stream. That's why I had no reservations snatching up the CD copy of Run and, I'm pretty sure, it hasn't left my car's head unit since it arrived. Not since Zedd's Clarity had I found an album that was so easily playable back-to-back and over again...and over again. The way Alex takes you through these productions is composed, fluid, and mature. Each track feels like it has a purpose and there are no fillers. Her own personal vocals just fit so perfectly into the track and they're equal parts pretty and full of pain. I would even go so far as to say that she's one hell of a songwriter AND a producer.Personal standouts for me would be Cold, One More Hit, Take It To Reality, and the Lido collaborate "Already Gone," which definitely holds the prize for most soulful vocals on the entire album. But, no matter what your flavor, don't discredit Run just because it's considered bass music or electronic music. Listen for yourself and I think you'll be quite pleased with its composition. It's definitely stolen a place as one of my top 5 favorite albums of the past 10 years.

Give her two or three listenings
Recently, I was at the barber, and while waiting for my turn, I went through a recent issue of Maxim. I came across an article on an Australian DJ named Alison Wonderland and it caught my interest. She had an intriguing backstory as someone who gave up a career in classical music and soon established herself as a presence on the Australian club scene. I became curious enough to listen to her new release Run. I must say that I was not sure what to make of it on my first listening, but something told me not to give up right away. On a day off, while doing a little work, I put the CD on again, played it several times and decided that it is pretty good. I particularly liked the songs "Cold" and "I Want U". Alison Wonderland's music is not the kind I usually listen to (my music collection might be described as esoteric pop), but Run proved to be an enjoyable departure from my comfort zone.
