The Residents in their glowing glory
I came late to the party that is The Residents. I've been immersing myself in their enthusiastically weird albums and videos only in the last few months! Yet, they've been putting out remarkable music and visual art for 40-something years. The Icky Flix DVD contains what seems to me their best videos, and much of their best music. Even better that they've added new audio with 5.1 surround sound, which you can optionally select if you'd rather hear that than the older, more primitive recordings. Here I come, Constantinople!

Visuals of the ultimate WEIRD
Our eyeball buddies have now graced us with the ultimate visuals to accompany their twisted, weird audio world. From their first blasphemy, The Third Reich and roll to their latest creation, NOTHING is left to the imagination when it comes to their dark, twisted world.Much like their other DVD's, their expanded CD Roms for the computer, this is not a true DVD. It is an interactive one, where you put in your own input and follow through a "maze" to discover their horriffic visions of the disturbed.Naturally, my favorite compilation in the DVD is their "Gingerbread Man." It graphicly depicts 5 of the 9 "happy" characters explored in their audio CD and their PC and Mac versions of their interactive CD Rom. Of particular interest is "The Weaver" as she weaves through all her paranoias of children being run over by cars, children cutting themselves with scissorrs and knives, children playing with guns, etc, etc. Also a good one is The Old Woman, as she tries to spray away her grandchildren who have morphed into insects. But behold! She has an ever-ready can of bug spray handy! This DVD is a MUST for us eyeball audiophiles!

9.99 aneurysm
For Residents fans only, non fans will think they stumbled on media made by some strange fanatic cult. That being said. There are 2 audio tracks for this, and the original 5.1 tracks sound great This needs a blu ray!

Abandon Hope Ye Who Enter Here
The Residents are an acquired taste, which is usually a dry valium type flavor. For fans, such as myself, this collection is picture perfect in every way. For those just getting on the wagon, this is the perfect introduction to The Residents. Each video contains the original music along with newer versions recorded in 2000, and believe me they do not sound the same. Along with dozens of easter eggs, this DVD shows a 30 year history of band no one has ever heard of.

AMERICA'S FAVORITE SINGING EYEBALLS CONQUER DVD!!
I have been a huge fan of the Residents for years and every release never fails to surprise me. Their music is unlike any I have heard before. Thier identities always masked, this strange group of musicians/graphic artists never fail to dumfound audiences worldwide through their spectacular performances. They not only pre-date punk rock/new wave by five to seven years (depending on how you count), but also (unknown to many) envisioned the concept of music video. They were among the first (if not THE first) musicians to fully immerse themselves in the CD-ROM medium and have now upgraded themselves for the DVD era. In doing so, they far surpass their mainstream musical competitors in utilizing the vast potential of this burgeoning technical medium. As noted in previous reviews, this is not a CD. It is a DVD, and what a DVD it is!! There are two separate audio tracks (Dolby Stereo and 5.1 Surround) which both sound great and the visuals more than live up to the high standards that DVD technology demands. Even the older pieces - Vileness Fats, Hello Skinny, Third Reich and Roll - though grainy, have a cleaned-up feel to them without losing the gritty ambiance of the original film stock. Audio tracks can be switched at any time during playback to reflect the viewer's tastes. However, the thing that I love most about this DVD are the bonus features. Instead of storing all bonus footage in a designated "bonus" section, like most DVD producers, the Residents elected to hide special "easter eggs" all throughout the disc. These extras include: material from Pee Wee's Playhouse, a special performance with Conway Twitty (!), various concert footage including appearances with the famous Snakefinger, a French ballet company's interpretive dance to a well-known favorite Rez tune (I won't tell you which!), and a slew of more fun stuff. You can find them everywhere in the menus of the interactive "Flix Cube" navigation system. Here's a hint: "Keep your EYES peeled for them in the MORE INFO sections." In addition to the "Flix Cube" navigation, the viewer can choose to watch the videos in sequence. There are hidden treats here as well. In between each video are randomized assortments of gleefully gross Rez shorts created just for this DVD that tickle the funny bone as much as they do the retina. All of this (and more) on a single-layered DVD! Truly amazing! As far as the content is concerned, this is nothing short of an astounding compilation of legendary Residents video. Old and new fans alike will delight in the marvellous collection of surreal black comedy contained herein. Among my favorites are the Gingerbread Man Concentrate, Hello Skinny, One Minute Movies, Bad Day, and Constantinople. I would recommend this DVD to 1) any fan of the Residents (casual or obsessive), 2) anyone who appreciates the surreal, horrific and ridiculous, 3) anyone who loves watching cutting edge performance art, 4) any tech-head audiophile DVD geek, 5) anyone who enjoys innovative computer animation . . . oh, hell. I recommend it for everyone!

Portrait Of AmeriKKKa
Not knowing much about The Residents but hearing & reading loads I decided to buy this as a beginners guide to.I wasn't & am not disappointed. The band are everything DEVO promised to be but better. Ok the dvd videos are a bit old & by modern sfx & videos look a bit ropey with cgi that is now dated to hell. But that does not really matter. What I got out of this is that The Residents are attempting to analyse the American Dream & deconstruct it & make sense of it & point the viewer & listener at everything that is good & wrong about it, much like Marilyn Manson did with his first album: Potrait Of An American Family.I'm buying more of The Residents on dvd asap, possibly a few albums & hopefully go see them live if they ever/still tour. Amazing dvd, go buy it. Restore your faith in music & videos potential. :) xXX
