Great for backpacking!
Product worked great on our 26 mile backpacking trip to Kings peak in Utah. Out performed the gravity type filtration by far. Light weight and easy to use.Tip, find faster moving water to filter to help reduce particulates in the water. Will make the pump last longer and water taste better.

Works well, but bulky, and hoses are way too flimsy.
I used this on a 30 mile Clarion river overnight kayaking trip. It worked well, but does take a while to produce any significant volume. My biggest gripe is the overall size and weight of the unit. Although not huge, it takes up a good amount of space in a pack, and the hoses are so soft and flexible that they kink constantly and restrict flow, making a slow pump even more aggravating. The cotton pre-filter also clogs up very quickly and had to be constantly smacked against the water to clear out enough to flow. The quality of the water was perfectly clear and had no taste, so the final product was great. Add some more rigid hoses, and wrap a coffee filter around the entire intake nozzle and it should be a lot better. I give it a solid "OK".

Worked as advertised
I just took this on a 20 mile hike. Had to pump water twice. Worked flawlessly. No sickness from the water. Easy to use. The only knock is that its a bit heavy, but it was about the same as the filters of my hiking companions, but this was much faster. Overall, I would recommend.

The distance
I am a youth leader and am always on campouts and hikes with descent sized groups. Often we cannot carry enough water and rely on water sources and filters to go the distance. I am not a fan of killing bugs with lights and chemicals and drinking them - just mentally not my favorite. I have tried several water filters and am a fan of this one. My last one of $80 broke when needed and I don't know that I could have afforded a new filter when it came due anyway. Much cheaper than the katadyn but I don't notice a difference. I like the air pump style. I like the concept of the grayl push top, but some youth just don't have the strength to use it once much less fill bottles for a small army. Easy maintenance when done - disassemble and dry. Solid float feature. Even comes with a cute little built in compass. I wouldn't know if it is as clean as advertised without any testing, but seems to be pretty good.

Excellent for Lake Superior
Lake Superior and its Aquaphers will plug the gravity filters and straws really fast with the high minerals. Seen bag filters plug in one fill . This is the only one I have seen that works for many weeks . I helped many people with water on the north country trail that had their filters plug up just a day or 2 in their trip.I found I can clean these filters and back flush w bleach and water and they do really well .I recommend this to all my friends.
