No. The canopy is either engaged in its fixed position over your head, or disengaged around the back of the chair.

Q: Does the canopy fold down or back if I don't want shade?

Yes, it's easy to fold back behind you even while sitting if you don't want shade or weather protection. I got the chair (maybe 8) years ago and accidentally left it at an out of town soccer tournament. I ordered a new one right away because no other chair compares. Wouldn't be without it!

I did not have the first one but I think this chair is great! Durable and can hold weight and is light enough for my kids to carry.
