Q: does this mechanical contraption accomplish something that a person cannot, with a regular knife? I cannot justify why it exists or how it is useful.

If you've ever tried to 'core' a strawberry with a regular knife you'll know that, while it can be done with a regular knife it's anything but easy. When strawberries are in local season, it's not necessary to 'core them, but the tough customers you end up with this time of year (late winter) need all the help they can get. Since my hands have joint and mild tremor problems, I needed a tool to help out. And this cute little thing does exactly what it says it does.

Q: Does it work well on smaller strawberries?

My strawberry is a bit smaller and it worked. You just have to make sure everything is lubed up.

Q: How easy is this to take apart and clean?

Not that easy but not hard either. just a bit annoying. 1. remove the green lynch pin with a fork/toothpick 2. push the main button and the internals pop right out. 3. clean 4. reassemble. to figure out which pair of blades go on top, look at the hole where they intersect. one of them will have a dip in the metal, providing a slot for the other pair to go on top. this is also what ensures that the blades are leveled. 5. assemble internals components and make the holes line up and carefully insert it so that a) the main button interior stick goes through both blades and spring and b) the holes for the lynch pin line up. 6. while holding the components into place, insert lynch pin go secure it. hammer the pin the rest of the way by gently tapping it against the kitchen counter
