Snow & Rose

A wonderful tale.
I bought this book to read to my five year old and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.She (and her younger sister) grew up with the author’s other books, which have long been favorites in our home. This book, while definitely not for babies, is truly a beautifully written story with impactful characters—and it addresses the full range of human emotions (including sorrow) in a manner that normalizes these feelings in children and adults. I highly recommend it for imaginative children. I’ve got my fingers crossed that somewhere out there a large Hollywood studio has purchased the movie rights from the author so, A.) the author can live comfortably and focus on writing for the rest of her life, and B.) so thus visionary writing can grace the silver screen—because it would adapt well.Buy this book for your children. They’ll love it. You’ll love it. What a grand adventure.

Fantastic
I bought this to read to my 6 and 8 year old granddaughters. It was my mother’s favorite fairy tale growing up and we have a picture book version. This chapter book version is absolutely riveting, with a few great illustrations. The literally begged me to keep reading, every session. The adults who wandered in and out of the room were dying to know what happened too. One of the best expanded fairy tales I’ve ever read.

Wonderful Retelling
This book is a wonderful retelling of the story of Snow White and Rose Red. Anyone, young and old, that enjoys retelling would find this to bean enjoyable read. A perfect mix of wonder and danger are in this book, but it’s not so scary that younger children can’t read it.

Gorgeous Illustrations & Delightful Story!
This is one of the most beautifully illustrated books that I've read in a long time. The illustrations and the lovely, sweet story are a charming combination. I think middle grade readers will find a lot to relate to in both Snow and Rose. Snow, though pale and icy, has a robust disposition, with feeling that feel to big for her to handle sometimes. Rose, on the other hand, is timid and wishes she might find it in herself to let her feelings carry her away sometimes. The differences between the sisters are endearing, and truly I think anyone has been a Snow or a Rose at different points in their life. I also appreciated that, while it was evident their mother was lost in grief for a time, she was not cast as the negligent parent, but rather had an active role in the story. The details of the forest are lyrically drawn - from the mysterious library that doesn't shelve books, but skeleton keys and other intriguing objects, to the small, mysterious man, who may be more sinister than he first appears. Their cottage is warm, cozy, and 0h-so-inviting. I was charmed by the whole book. The ending feels a bit rushed, in my opinion, especially after the somewhat slow build of the beginning of the book. There's a delicate air of mystery and a bit of suspense at the end, but nothing that I feel would be too much for even sensitive readers (unless they just really don't like forests or bears). The whimsy of the telling and the depth of character make this a story worth reading. I'll probably read it again one day! :)

My daughter (age 14 in May) ADORES this book. She says it’s a wonderful blend of heartbreak, mystery, fantasy, adventure & justice, all within a “cottage core” setting. She absolutely loves it & is begging the author: ENCORE!!! ENCORE PLEASE!!!

Enchantingly delicious!
The book is gorgeously written and weaves a simplified but not simple tale. The language and metaphors are lovely and complex while younger readers (or listeners) can follow the main story. There was enough mystery and foreshadowing to have ample opportunities to pose while-reading questions, to make connections and to make predictions. There are a few points or semi loose ends that aren’t fully explained or pointed out, but they are not inconsistencies, just more intricate concepts or implications that older readers will notice and may want to discuss. There are also some things about which the reader never gets a full explanation: again, it works well, but younger readers who are used to neatly packaged stories may have questions.I read this out loud to my seven year old who loved it. It gets tense in parts, but the overall tone of the book is as enchanting as the soft brushstrokes of the illustrations that scatter the pages, filled with the spell of the hushed quiet one would expect in magic woods.
