Secrets of a Sun King

Amazing, spectacular read!
Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carrol is set in London in 1922.In this story we meet a girl called Lillian who travels to Egypt with her friends Oz and Tulip in hope of returning a canopic jar with some mystery contents to save her grandad. It's a race against time as Howard Carter is also in Egypt about to make an historic discovery. The main character is Lillian, a girl who is brave, poor yet determined to save her grandad. My favourite character is Oz because of his wit and how he's so unpredictable. All in all, it is a spectacular book. It makes you connect with the characters and I like how the story is split - one part set in 1922 and one in Egyptian times following the life of Tutankhamun. Although there were a few plot holes and undeveloped characters that really needed explaining. My favourite part was when Lilian had a go at Howard Carter because it was really funny and I feel Howard Carter got what he deserved.Overall it's an amazing book. I would rate this 4 and a half stars . I would recommend this book for ages 7+ purely because there are some complicated words. I also like how it talks a lot about morals including never give up and our differences shouldn't actually make a difference.

Fascinating and thrilling!
A beautifully written adventure that weaves the history and mystery of Ancient Egypt into the daring adventures of a young girl called Lilian. The mysterious death of a Professor of Middle Eastern art, connected with her own grandfather, sparks the journey of a lifetime for Lilian. She must return the priceless and secret remains of Tutankhamen to his true tomb and try to release her grandfather from their suspected curse .The plot moves between Lil's journey and experiences in Egypt and the movingly written translated extracts from the secret ancient scrolls Lilian is preciously protecting. I loved the way the scrolls brought the Boy King to life and made the reader feel like they were transported back into a different time and place. Then, back in the Egypt of 1922, we now understand even more deeply why Lil and her friends are so willing to risk danger and discovery to break the curse and return the relics. I cared as much about the long dead Kyky,Maya and Lysander as i dis about the fabulous and fearless Lil,Tulip,Oz and Pepe.Emma Carroll evokes the history and mood of the time the story is set so brilliantly and thoroughly. Alongside the themes of friendship, family and belonging lies the focus on feminism(with some powerful words from Lil's dad in Chap 10), shifting power within different cultures and the idea of moral responsiblity.A truly fabulous adventure to go on.
