As a professor and pastor myself, I am grateful for other practitioner-scholars who write for the sake of the church and the Great Commission.Dr. Linn’s study of the book of James quickly reminded me again that Christ followers must live in accordance with his will. Fully. Obediently. Without compromise. Period. There really is no other option for believers. This book made me not only long to teach the book of James again, but more importantly to make sure I am living a faithful, obedient, humble, prayerful life as a teacher of the Word. I want to walk the walk.Dr. Linn is a preacher at heart, and this work reflects that passion. It is indeed a “verse-by-verse” study of the book of James. Dr. Linn’s background study is apparent in his exegesis of the texts, and his desire to communicate the Word well is obvious in his use of illustrations and applications. In fact, you could learn the content of James simply by reading that book and the clear, simple headings of each chapter of Dr. Linn’s book. More than once I thought as I read this book, “I need to remember that illustration" or "I need to hear that application."The copy I received had some typographical errors, but I recommend this resource for anyone who is studying or teaching the book of James. You will appreciate its brevity, clarity, and applicability. You will also, as I do, look forward to the next volume in this series.

This is a wonderful expositional study of the book of James. It gives theological truths and applications while speaking clearly to the reader.

I genuinely loved this book! It is a practical guide for Christian behavior and growth.

In this commentary you get to experience that unique blend of solid scholarship and pastoral application. While highly technical commentaries are of use, they usually don't help readers to connect the dots with everyday life. On the other side of things, there are commentaries that lack the exegetical infrastructure and precision that gives rise to the application. Todd manages to avoid both ditches in his beautiful exposition of the book of James. One other thing worthy of mention is his personal integrity. I have been privileged to witness his personal faithfulness as a fellow pastor in the same city. Todd walks the walk. Every reader of any book of this kind ought to care about the personal integrity of the author. In this resource, the reader is afforded comprehensive integrity. The reader will quickly discover that this book is not only a helpful commentary on the book of James but is also a great book to read.Todd’s writing style is clear, concise and easy to follow. I found his approach to James especially helpful as he writes early on that James’ goal is not to tell us how to become a Christian but instead how to behave as one.This book will be an excellent resource for the pastor preaching through the book of James, a Bible study leader searching for a readable resource, or a growing Christian who simply wants to follow Jesus more closely.I highly recommend Todd’s book.
