The Mono is an artist grade pencil -- it's smoother, quieter at the same grade. The 8900 says 'For General Writing' on them. Keep in mind that it's not a Japanese pencil. It's made in Vietnam. A good pencil for 6 bucks, though. **Q: How hard or soft is the graphite? I want to use this for note-taking, so I'd like something with a relatively harder and darker graphite.** A: This is about the softest pencil grade normally sold for writing. It is dark, easy to erase and doesn't cut into soft paper. But it will also smear easily. That's the trade off with soft pencils. I think it is perfect for newspaper crossword puzzles and pretty good for drawings where you want shading.
