Awesome Lens
I wanted to upgrade from the Kit Lens and this was a great buy.Nikon built this thing like a tank. Nice and rigid construction with lots of options - Auto/Manual selection, Vibration control, metal collar.18mm is nice and wide with good all around photos - no distortion that I ever notice on the edges, which some people have complained of with wider lenses. Zoomed out to 140mm still takes fabulous photos and I zoom out that length a fair amount of time. The only thing that might be viewed as a negative is the Auto Focus motor is slightly loud, but it doesn't bother me. Fast action on Auto with very, very good vibration control. I can use this lens with some longer exposures and not use a tripod, still getting pretty sharp photos. This Nikon lens is my "go to" and I rarely use any other lens. I purchased a refurb and have had no issues. Price is still pretty good. Definitely recommend this lens.

it's a goner and like my 200
What a handy lens! I used to carry the 18-200mm, but it eventually broke. So why didn't I re-buy it? The 200 had serious 'lens creep' where the lens would extended itself as you walked around - The 140 does not. The 200 was larger (72mm filter size compared to 67 on the 140 - minimal difference) and heavier. I carry a 70 - 300mm as well, iff I really need the distance. so why not five stars? Simple - It's made inTaiwan, almost all plastic (except for the mount), if you drop it, it's a goner and like my 200, eventually it will die. Unlike my professional lenses with a much better build, these 'walk around' lenses trade quality for convenience. But they do save me from taking the pro line lenses to the zoo! Excellent sharp image over a great zoom range works for me.

Lens Is New, Not Refurbished
First of all, I have to say that I am very satisfied with this lens. Prior to this purchase, I was using kit lenses with my D7500. Autofocus with D7500 always seemed slow and imprecise; sometimes it just didn't seem to work at all. With this lens, the autofocus works almost flawlessly. My earlier problem was cheap lenses, not the D7500. During a recent vacation, I took over 2000 photos and videos with this lens. They are generally good quality. However, I did get some vignetting when the lens was fully extended, and light was dim late on a cloud afternoon.Second, a still curious about the origin of the lens. It was definitely new; in fact, the first few times I extended it, it was still quite stiff, but loosened up immediately. The lens was absolutely clean and free of dust. I am certain that no one had used it before! So, why did this lens claim to be reconditioned?Theory 1: There is gold paint on raised lettering near the mount; on mine, the gold paint was uneven, thicker on the outer side and thinner on the in side. Maybe this was viewed by Nikon as a quality defect and the lens couldn't be sold as new.Theory 2: Nikon has of course discontinued the whole D series of cameras, and there is no longer a market for lenses in new cameras. Perhaps Nikon had overproduced these lenses, and realizing that they might never sell them, dumped them on the liquidator market. My lens arrived by itself in plain box (no printing), and there was absolutely no documentation with it. However, it did come with an aftermarket lens hood. This wasn't indicated on Amazon when I ordered, and I ordered a separate hood when I ordered this lens. So, now I can lose one! Shouldn't be hard to do, since I lose my glasses 8-10 times a day.
