Q: Will the compartments fit an 18 size pocket watch?

Compartments measure 2-3/16" wide x 3-5/8" tall x 1-3/4" deep. The size 18 watch will certainly fit but cases are actually made for wrist watches on bands or bracelets. I guess you could put the pocket watch in the bottom of the compartment with the cushion on the top of it.

Q: This thing was $37 on sale from $50 in 2017, now it doubled in price for some reason. I wonder if the quality even improved for the price hike?

I’d say no. I’m sure you can get better quality. I ended up splurging and buying a brand name product
