Capablanca's Best Chess Endings: 60 Complete Games

superb chess book.
One of the best chess books I've ever read! Position is first then material; space and time are complementary to position. This is a Capablanca dictum. Chernev has written a great book about capablancas sixty best games with an emphasis on endings. The full games are given annotated. Chernev does occassionally omit notes for simplicity sake but still one of the best chess authors there's been. Capablanca the greatest chess player of all time; no better! Very small amount of typing errors and the book is updated in long algebraic. The book was new but a copy of the original. The games are very instructive and learned many useful themes. I believe improvement gained; won game against computer (classical limit) using capablanca method. I do have a bias for Capablanca and Sherry!

Geat endgame book
aside from silman's complete endgame course and 100 endgames you must must know [ which are a must have ] this book is perfect to see how a master at endgame plays the endgame and puts your studying to practice on top of that chernev's books are the best !

Want to seriously learn about endgames and chess in general? Look no further!!
I bought this book about a year ago on recommendation form a friend in my local chess club. I wanted to learn more about positional play and endgames without being bored to death. This book rarely leaves my side and i am on my fourth read through. It's well written with most of the emphasis on endgames although the full games are given with some great pointers for positional play from opening to ending. You cannot fail to learn each time you pick up this book and play through and digest the magnificent games inside. My rating and general play has improved immesurably.Capablanca is a natural genius well before his time and the author brings this point home time and time again. You will learn all aspects of pawn and piece play in the endgame. Chess in the hands of Capablanca seems so effortless and simple.A truly amazing book that is a must buy for those seroius about improving!Ps.Another engame book that is very user friendly is Jeremy Silman's Complete Endgame Course. (Highly recommended)

Great book spoiled by poor reproduction
The stars refer to the printing quality of this edition. It is an excellent book, a classic really on the endgame. However it has been spoiled by this very poor quality latest Dover edition. The page paper used is thin, the printing looks rather poor and the board diagrams are even worse. The front and back cover is badly reproduced rather like one of those 'print on demand' books, and a bad one. I used to have an earlier Dover copy of this about 25 years ago and that was excellent quality, it's a shame Dover couldn't make a better job with this edition. After rightly enthusing about the brilliance and quality of Capablanca's endgame play on the back cover it's a pity they couldn't produce an equally good quality book to display it! I returned this copy and would advise anyone to go for a different edition of this classic book to avoid disappointment.

The only chess master who can write
Chernev is still the only chess author who can really write. He communicates not just instruction but his love and excitement for the game. I tend to play these games one move at a time; I try to guess Capablancas moves and then see where I went wrong. Chernev has an uncanny ability to know when the reader will need some guidance; whenever I am particularly puzzled by one of Capablanca's moves, I can be sure Chernev will have an accompanying comment. One more positive thing to note is that this book also contains informative analysis on the opening and middle game.
