Q: Do these calipers require calibration?

The short answer is yes, because it uses springs that inevitably lose resistance over time. The manual recommends "periodic" calibration which costs about $75. I take periodic to be every 2-3 years but it depends on how often it's being used and for what purpose (personal use, investigation, certification for wrestling, etc). You can also buy calibration dowels for this either with a bundle kit or separately. That way you can keep an eye on calibration and only send in when necessary. For more casual, informal use, and if checking with the calibration dowels, you could wait longer than 3 years. The answer would be the same for Lange calipers.

No it is not. The dial will go back to zero once released. I believe the SKydex digital skinfold caliper will do that, though.
