The excellent translation and introduction by Andrew George presents to the modern reader the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh which dates back to 2000 BC. The epic and its verse translation preserve on the one hand the alienness of the ancient thought-world but show also that the question of mortality - one of the central questions of our being - is a historic invariant. While the content of the story is well known, this particular edition is a masterpiece in itself, proving not only the standard version of the epic, but also earlier Babylonian and Sumerian sources.
