Do the grooves for the stand work well?

The stand works very well. It is three strips of leather (?) sewn down but they are raised high enough to hold tablet quite well.

NO! I just received this and it was too small for my Samsung Tab A 10.1 with S-pen I received in nov 2016

Yes it will fit the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 tablet SM-T580 & T-585. I'm not sure what you mean by the second part of your question but I think if your asking about the pen holder, they all come with a pen holder and ball point pen, no matter which case you buy. If you already have a stylus then that may go in the holder if you prefer.

Can the stand be used in a portrait mode?

It can if u want to look at it at 180 degrees there is no tilt

Sehr gute Schützhülle für Tablets

Sehr gute Hülle, kaum bis kein Eigengeruch. Steht sehr sicher, dank der 3 Standstreifen, die auch gleichzeitig mit dem Rand dafür sorgen das der Druck bei geschlossenem Deckel gleichmäßig verteilt wird. Dank dickerem "Ledermaterial" auch besser geschützt als einfache Billigteile. Sieh wertiger aus. Das Gewicht ist dadurch natürlich höher, aber das stört mich nicht. Der beigefügte Stift ist auch ganz praktisch ( 1 Seite Kugelschreibermine / andere Seite 1 Gumminoppen für Menschen mit größeren Fingern, falls man bei der Displaytastatur des Tablets Probleme hat die genauen Buchstaben zu treffen.
