What is the real difference for a female vocal between the 945 and 935?

Thicker frequency response, crisper high end with less feedback. More overall power. I'm a male vocalist, but this is good on the high end frequencies.

How would this compare to Shure's beta 87? similar price range.

I own both. To me, the Sennheiser is smoother and has a more produced sound with nice smooth high end. The e945 has less bass response than the Shure beta but the e945 has better feedback rejection as it is hyper-cardoid. I primarily use the e945 over the beta 87 as I like the feedback rejection, smooth high end and pleasant sound with less eq. However every voice is different so it's hard to tell. The hyper-cardiod pattern is a little less forgiving on mic technique as you need to be right on top of the mic for best results. If you move a lot and are rocking out, then the beta 87 may be better. Both are built like tanks.

sennheiser e945 or shure SM58?

The e945 is more directly comparable to the Shure Beta 58A, which is a step above the 58, at least for female voices. My wife finds the e945 truer than the beta, and both better than the 58. (we have all 3). As others have pointed out, the ruggedness of the 58 make it a standard for gigging; there's nothing flimsy about the Sennheiser, but I don't know how it stands up to real abuse.
