Nature and Properties of Soils, The, Global Edition

Quite simply the best
This is a must read for anyone who works with soil. It is the definitive text book on soils, comprehensively brought up to date and relevant to anyone anywhere. Whilst it covers the technical stuff, it remains readable and comprehensible for the layman throughout. Some of the new research described within it if acted upon has the potential to revolutionise conventional world agriculture. Awesome!😎

Good value
The book’s 1104 pages are full of useful diagrams, photos and tables and the style of writing is clear. There is a comprehensive glossary, plus an index, but a list of acronyms would save time for forgetful readers like me. Although this is the global edition it is based on North American soils and practices. There are quite a lot of references to other parts of the world, especially Africa, but little about other English speaking areas or about Europe. The book does explain some aspects of chemistry, but readers ought to have a grasp of basic chemistry beforehand if they are to get the most from it. Some points also keep getting repeated - which can be useful – but I think tighter editing would have helped. On balance I’m glad I bought this American book. I’ve learnt a lot about the principles of soil science and I’m not aware of a comparable book intended for a UK audience.
