This is a good book for learning the basics.
Having worked 50 years in the industry of mechanical engineering, there is a lot more to know, but this is a good starting point. There are better graphs and pictures in other more modern books. I recommend looking for other sources that are out there. To supplement this book. Tubal Cain is a real character in the Bible. This Tubal Cain has written lots of other books and is well known in model engineering circles Especially in Britain.

This title could be “Everything You Will Need To Know About Hardening, Tempering & Heat Treating”
This book arrived ahead of schedule and I was pleasantly surprised that the author is one who I follow on YouTube. I found detailed answers to every question I have and a load of answers to questions I haven’t thought of. It is loaded with technical stuff, some of which may take me years to understand. It will surely become well used and dog eared in no time!

Sensible choice
This book is a sensible choice for someone considering doing heat treating of steel at home or in a small shop. There is a reasonable basic explanation of the theory, though not in the detail you can find in texts aimed at industrial users. There is quite a bit of practical advice on small-shop methods, which is not well-covered in industrial books. By the way, the web page for the book says the author is George Gently, but the book cover says Tubal Cain.

Surprisingly the "best" of the bunch!
When I purchased this book, I thought it would be just O.K., but it's become more dear to me and my anticipated projects with each turn of the page. Probably the most important of my recent re-beginning blacksmith education. Full revelation; I am recently retired and recall a childhood standing alongside my father, cranking the coal forge. He made Knives, Draw-Knives, Smith welding, Hinges, and more. I have some (small) hot iron/steel experience. I acquired a few tools of the trade and now have time to play. The books seemed a reasonable way to "NOT REINVENT ALL THE WHEELS" before me. I also recently attended some beginning blacksmith workshops held locally. As "they" say get doing. I recommend this book. Sean

This is a great book for the home machinist
This is a great book for the home machinist. It's the best book I've read on heat treating. A must for the home machinist bookshelf.

Good book, tiny printing
Very nice book, interesting and informative. Very small printing. This book is fine for the machinist, mechanic, or lay person. It is not an engineering text.

Good reference
This book gets a little tedious at times, but overall is an excellent reference that documents information on the subject, some of which won't be used frequently, but when it is needed you'll be able to find it here. Excellent book. I highly recommend it.

I am a retired machinist and most parts that needed heat treating would have been sent out. On some occasion parts would be hardened in the shop but this book would have been a lot of help. I would buy again.

Very much an old school type book that may only have been written in the mid 80's but is more reminiscent of a book from the 1920's. In some respects this just shows how much has changed over the last 25 years when a book written in the 80's has more in common with a book from the 20's. Today you expect to get high-res photo's and CAD drawings at the very least not grainy hand drawn black and white images and low-res photographs that only just help illustrate a point. But - it's not necessarily a bad thing. Firstly there is the nostalgia thing going on for people of my age and older. I can connect with a book like this from my days as an engineering cadet in the early 1980's. Putting that aside most of all the author does not treat you like a gibbering moron with an attention span of that of a goldfish. To a younger person this book may feel overly wordy and maybe a bit heavy but I like the fact the author takes a somewhat pontificating stance and covers everything comprehensively. The author Tubal Cain - no idea where that name comes from but he knows his stuff - treats you like a reasoning thinking adult which is rather refreshing given the force fed sound-bites that seem to be associated with 'knowledge' today. So, if you want to understand properly heat treating etc. to a pretty good level of depth then this is an excellent book.
