No, the bristles are not wire. This brush is not intended to "de-rust" the cast iron as you would do with a wire brush. This brush is intended to be used to "clean" (no soap of course) your pot/skillet after cooking. I use it everyday - highly recommend it!

Depends on how hot. The bristles are nylon and will melt.
