That is why, from a traditional standpoint, French Pressed coffee has routinely been considered the superior way to brew coffee: Because there is no paper involved. Paper filters out some of the oils that help with the flavor profile whereas metal allows those filters to pass through. However, the metal filter does wear out over time. I'll tell you why I switched to this product over a metal filter pour over, though. The reason why is because I believe that the narrow beaker provides a better extraction. Gravity works a bit more in our favor here, as it forces a bit more extraction, and more of the grounds are exposed to the water as the water has to trickle through more of the grounds to get through. My first impression: This unit makes a better cup of coffee than the one you linked (which I also own). However, this unit would make a better cup of coffee if it came with a metal filter. **Q: i am not a coffee expert and I am buying this for a gift. What is the difference between this glass coffee maker and the machine maker?** A: The Chemex allows you to control the temperature of the water used. It is more time intensive but the quality of the coffee is superior to that in a drip machine. This is great for someone who really cares about coffee. If your gift recipient is fine with 7-11 or gas station coffee, go with the drip machine.
