It has a photo cell in it that activates it when the sun goes down. Then it begins flashing, to look like the eye of a predator, to the nuisance animal. Then when the sun comes up, it turns off and starts charging again. I guess its just geared toward the nocturnal hunters. **Q: How many hours of direct sun are required to effectively charge battery to = a full night's functioning?** A: Thank you for the question. The Predator Eye only needs about 3-4 hours of direct sunlight in order for it to stay on throughout the night. **Q: Would this actually work against bears?** A: I dont think so. It's no use against cats. **Q: How do you activate these?** A: hey are set to go - it took me a while to find that, on the bottom, there is a tiny rubber "thingie"..... there is a tiny piece of plastic under that, that needs to be removed. You may have to use tweezers to get hold of it. Once that protective piece is removed, press the rubber piece back in place; you are set to go...after a few hours in the sun, the eye will automatically come on when darkness falls. I installed these months ago, and have had no visitors since then (knock on wood). I attached one of these devices at fox height on a tree. The fox removed it and laid it face down on the ground. I've tried lots of other things - none of them work.
