This scribing gauge by Marhynchus is a well made tool that does exactly what you want it to do: scribe a precision line(s) for cutting, transferring a measurement, doing mortise and tenon work, or laying out a channel or groove. The tool is solid ebony and has a really good feel to it. This is a pin scribe, which works best for marking with the grain on apiece of wood. There is a single pin on one side and adjustable dual pins on the other for laying out grooves (this is accomplished by turning the thumb screw on the end of the marking wand portion). The top pin on the dual side is also adjustable in the it can be repositioned so it is on the very edge of the marking arm (it is held in a sliding channel and secured with a screw). The pins are extremely sharp and exposed so they can get caught on clothes, fingers, etc. The gauge works very well but there is a slight learning curve to using it, but once you have, it is a great tool.Some cons: first, it comes with NO instructions, so you may have to go looking around for how-to’s. Second, the pins are fixed so you cannot adjust them for depth, which would have been nice. As said above, the pins are exposed and the scribe does not come with a case so that means storage and transport can be an issue. Finally, I can see no easy way to sharpen the pins when they become dull; this may not be an issue but I will see.Not every woodworker needs a scribing gauge like this, but as you up your game and get into more classical joinery, this tool will be a huge plus to have in your arsenal. It is reasonably priced for what you get.
