Good question. I have washed it myself and it is ok... But one thing that edges on the mat are really sharp like blade... Make sure you wear something with long sleeves .. I had to find out the hard way... I had so much micro cuts just above my wrist... That is the only reason I washed it hoping that sharpness will go away but it didn't work..Used aftershave to stop the pain....Good luck
