Q: Is this sturdy enough to help an elderly person also stand after kneeling?

This item needs to be assembled, after delivery. The wood is of good weight, and the hardware is great. I followed the directions in assembly (You can also find a video of this on YouTube - "Prayer Kneeler Assembly"). It is a very solid unit, and I've tested it out with my 170 lbs. I think it should be good for many folks.

Q: How many inches are between the knee pad and the top, where my elbows would be? I would think that some people wouldn't be comfortable.

Howdy, I used a tape measure, and there's 2 feet 2 inches from the kneeling pad to the place where your arms would rest. I'm 5'7", and my arms rested comfortably on the top pad of this kneeler.
