Fresh, crispy, sweet and tasty
There is some debate as to whether the "Chinese Leaf" is a cabbage or a lettuce. Apparently it is a brassica which is a celery cabbage, or wombok. I am not sure that I feel better for knowing this piece of trivia or not but what I do know is that, whatever it is, it tastes great and is fresh and crunchy and is one of those rare leaves that you can eat either hot or cold. I cannot imagine eating cooked lettuce or uncooked cabbage. It works well as a dipper too, as the leaves have sufficient rigidity to scoop your dip of choice without wilting. I have tried them too as a layer in a flat bread wrap and they are perfect for this job too as they are able to hold together, again with no wilting and the flavour is not impaired when they are slightly warmed if they come into contact with the hot fillings of your wrap, for example spicy chicken. These are really easy to prepare too. All you need to do is cut them at the base and you have a well formed leaf that can be used straight away and there is virtually no wastage that you get with, say, an iceberg lettuce, where the outer leaves are too floppy and the middle part too hard, you can use virtually all of your Chinese leaf and it is, apparently, available all year round.

Long lasting
I do like chinese lettuce. It lasts for ages in the fridge and is still fresh looking and tasting after several weeks.

Nice, Crisp and Fresh but Smallish
Nice and fresh, crisp and great in most dishes and food value compared to local Asian stores but these are on the smaller side. Ideal for making smaller batches of Kimchi or a few leaves torn with noodles. Lasts well in the fridge and will buy again.
