The Plain and Simple Guide to Music Publishing: What You Need to Know About Protecting and Profiting from Music Copyrights, 3rd Edition

Thanks for writing this book Randall! Someone used two of my songs on a show which aired on PBS several times without my permission.

I have been a published musician for more than 15 years. My music has been purchased, played, and propagated through the world for decades, literally. Music publishing is extensively complicated, and no single book has taught me more than this one. It is highly insightful, well-written, and dumbed down enough so that the average starting musician should be able to use it with ease. This book helped me start my own publishing company, helped me sort out the very best ways to shunt revenue directly to my name and bank accounts, and has showed me that even something as labyrinthine as music publishing can be translated to the modern musician’s needs. Highly recommend.

This is THE BIBLE for what you need to know and NOT get screwed in the music industry. The Forward by Tom Petty, kinda explains it all. Get this book if you want to be in the music business. I am Certain that many people Bought this book that are in the music industry, if they looked back, would value this book in the Thousands of dollars in value. This book is the book you need. Read the first 30 pages and you will be VERY educated, but not too overwhelmed. when I got the the book, I read 15 pages day, and highlighted tons of stuff!

This is a very good book that actually shows there is nothing plain and simple about the music business. It is packed with very good useful details and not stupid generalizations. You’ll keep coming back to it over and over.

Great introduction to the music publishing world. One warning though, it barely has any information on streaming royalties, digital distributors, the new breed of admin publishers (SongTrust, TuneCore, etc.) and other game-changers. The next edition needs a serious update, because I've read the 1st and 3rd editions which were 90% the same.

If you hope to make money by writing music you really need to read this book. There are many other books about music publishing and the music business out there, but after reading them all, I can confidently say that this is the most lucid, entertaining, and current one available. Randall has administered my publishing for years and I can say from long experience he totally knows his stuff.

Very good resource for those wanting to learn about music publishing. I'm currently more than halfway through. Some topics could have used more explanation. Overall, I would recommend it.

Book took a good look at the "basics" about not getting ripped off. But how about showing the artist how to take the "detailed" steps necessary to sell and market songs after showing the artist how to become a publisher? There were no fashioned orderly steps to guide the reader. I got nothing from the book. I will seek another more detailed read that allows one to get a result.

Informative, up-to-date, clear, totally on the songwriters' side. This is a great book on the subject. In fact, I had the second edition, but bought this third edition as soon as it became available because of the new subjects covered.

I think that every songwriter should read this book. Especially in these days and age where publishing matters can become very complex. I particularly appreciated the author's expertise and humour.

Don't think the book was good value for money. Content was good however and easy to follow, so worth a look
