I love this entire series!
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from Dr. Caprice Wilson in this book. She is always so readily available to help her clients so it was refreshing to hear that her life is just as upside down as all the rest of us. When things get so far out of her control, she hits rock bottom. Her good friend steps in and threatens reporting her if she doesn’t get some help. She takes him up on that offer but she’s going to do it on her own terms. However, that didn’t quite go as planned. Dr. Wilson finds herself in a fight for her life. Both literally and figuratively. No one knows where she is and she has no means of communication. She’s determined to make it through and uses all of her training and knowledge to do so.

Another wonderful book.
All of the books in both the Lei Crime and Paradise Crime series are compelling reads. Each novel leads seamlessly into the next as does the progression from the Lei series to the Paradise series. This story highlighting Caprice Wilson is yet another addition to this amazing selection. I would read Unsound either during the Lei Crime series as Caprice makes a greater appearance in those books. Toby Neal is an excellent author who gives wonderfully vivid descriptions of the sights and sounds of Hawaii as well as making all of her characters 'real' people, many of whom we would like to know. Keep the books coming. Can't wait for the next one.

The trail is as much a character as the psychologist
This story is related to the author's "Lei Crime" series and involves a minor character (Lei's psychologist) from one of Toby's other novels. It is set on Maui, specifically along Sliding Sands Trail on Mount Haleakala. I've hiked a small (2 mile) section of this trail and I found the experience one of the ten best of my life. The scenery is amazing. And Ms. Neil has obviously hiked this trail as well and loves it as much as I do. The setting is utterly real. This is a stalker tale, told from the victim's point of view. The tale is chilling -- the stalker is playing mind games with the psychologist; she recognizes this but is still affected by them. Gripping stuff. I love a strong female main character; they're rare in fiction.Read this for the story. Read it for the character development. Or read it for the magnificent desolation of the scenery, described by one who was there and experienced it. You will enjoy this novel.

Unsound is not unsound
I voraciously consume novels set in my former home, and am really enjoying working my way through the Lei Crime series. Sometimes I can just hear her talking in her local girl accent. This book was entirely different, but I loved it. Dr. Wilson is an intriguing repeating character in the series, and it was fun to get to know her better. The plot literally had me on the edge of my seat for an entire hour as I waited for my doctor. Spend a few hours (mostly) in Haleakala Crater with her. You won't be sorry.

A good story overall
This book pulls a secondary character from Neal’s Lei Crime series onto center stage.Psychologist Caprice Wilson is near rock bottom in her personal life when she’s ordered into rehab for alcohol addiction. Instead, she takes matters into her own hands and sets off on a solitary hike to conquer her demons. Only things go terribly wrong when the man who’s been leaving items stolen from her patients outside her office shows up.I like Neal’s writing and storytelling style and it’s nice to see a different character star in a book. But I still like her Lei Crime series better than the two standalones I’ve read. That’s due mainly to my being more partial to mystery/crime novels than suspense/thrillers.There were more ‘passive’ than active scenes in this book, but were entirely appropriate for this type of story as Caprice tries to talk her way out of the danger she’s in.If you like a novel with good tension (even those passive scenes had plenty), this is a book you won’t want to miss. I wouldn’t mind reading another book starring Caprice Wilson.

Police Psychologist vs. Stalker
First and foremost to remember is that even police psychologists are people first, that she has problems of her own. Dr. Caprice Wilson is a middle-aged woman who is divorced, never realizing that she, too, has fallen out of love, though not in the same way as her ex-husband and his 22 yr. old Cirque du Soleil acrobat. He leaves for Vegas as their only son leaves for university in California. She's alone with only her cat and vodka for company. Dr. Wilson suddenly finds she's being stalked by someone who knows her clientele and takes souvenirs from them to leave at the doctor's door. She needs help and her boss does an intervention for her, giving her 3 choices for rehab. She however chooses her own way...alone. And therein lies the crux of the story.Thank you, Toby Neal, for another great book. I really enjoyed the photos, too.

5 Stars, But...
Yes,I gave this 5 stars, but not the same 5stars I've given her other books. This was a completely different type of story, but I honestly could not only give it a 4...I liked it more than that. But this 5 is not as strong as the 5's of the reviews of her Lei Crime Series. At first I was waiting for more characters, and the "real story" to begin, but I slowly realized that this story was only going to have one main story with a bunch of past happenings that drove the story. It was going to be about personal survival, mental, physical, and psychological. Yes, this. Is very different from the Lei Crime stories, but it was very well written, and we learned a lot about Dr. Wilson, and many things in her quest we could relate to in our lives...if we are honest with ourselves. Yes, this is a very worthwhile book to read. I'm glad it is not the last one of Ms. Neal's books, but alas, I have to wait this time to read more, since she does not have the next books ready yet. Boohoo. I've come to love being able to finish a novel, and in seconds download the next one in the series. Immediate gratification...we all do live in that kind of world. I hope you give this book a chance, it's different, but worth it. Enjoy!

You'll never walk alone again!
Dr. Caprice Wilson is the main character of this companion novel to the Lei Crime series. She is a psychologist who we have met through her sessions with the main character Lei in those books. This time she is trying to come to terms with her own demons, and spends time walking alone in Maui. The settings described actually transport you there, with Toby's home island taking a starring role. The subtle twist from a psychologist in control to a woman who has to find the courage to endure her troubles makes you realise how fragile life can be. Thoroughly recommended.

intense suspense novel
Being a psychologist myself (albeit retired), I was interested in the protagonist (and have enjoyed reading about how she has dealt with Lei in other books by Toby Neal). This book is not a murder mystery or police procedural. Rather, it is an intense suspense novel, at times a VERY intense suspense novel. So not really my cup of tea, but if you enjoy suspense novels, I can recommend it.
