Excellent book on JavaScript programming
This book is well written and easy to understand. There are tons of example problems in this book and to my surprise, they are all very clearly solved, explained and presented.I finished reading this book on the computer (PDF), but I had to purchase this book for future references because I found it to be that helpful.

Good for getting into JavaScript, Beginner or experienced with other Languages.
Bought this book for a class, its very informative and a good reference while learning the ins and outs of the language. I have prior experience with other languages such as C++, C#, and some D lang so its fairly easy to follow along but I feel someone with very little knowledge would be able to follow along with the examples just as easily.

Clear, somewhat pedestrian, but useful
This is an OK JavaScript tutorial. The explanations are simple and correct, as you would expect from a good tutorial. It also seems to cover everything I'd like covered in a book of this sort, both the "pure JavaScript" stuff as well as covering tools you use JavaScript to work with. One problem is the rather pedestrian writing style and pedagogical approach. Along these lines perhaps the most annoying thing are perfunctory and boringly obvious explanations of the examples. I recommend typing in and running all the examples (of course; you should always do that), but rarely actually read the explanations. I'm sure there are others who love and appreciate this approach, but I find it a bit dull. The first half of the book seems accessible to total beginners to programming. More experienced programmers who are approach JS for the first time might be better served by another book. The second half, which covers the DOM and more advanced topics, has some more difficult things. There's another sort of problem with this book. I've lost some patience with some of the explanations of more difficult concepts here. In order to understand how string search methods, regexen, and the DOM work, it necessary to get out of the weeds and explain some very general topics. As I worked through this material (which isn't that difficult, I've learned a lot of it in other contexts), I found myself having to sort of fill in the blanks, do web searching, etc. This book doesn't try to conceptually structure the material enough; it is mostly a catalog of functions interspersed with some examples. Beyond that, sometimes the explanations of relatively simple concepts just aren't very good. I'm pretty sure I would have been happier with another book.
