A great prompt to increase vocabulary
Two of our children are currently working towards the 11+ for a super selective school. Friends who have successfully navigated their way through this process have reiterated time and time again that good vocabulary is key to achieving the scores needed to gain a place. Despite being well read I think my children sometimes don't truly understand the meaning of some words as they rarely read aloud to me and don't pause to consider the meaning of new words when reading alone. These cards have gone down really well with the children. We haven't used them as flash cards in the true sense of the word but we have played games with them (e.g. lay a selection out, one person gives a definition and the other has to find the card). We have also used them in a 'pick two cards and use them in your literacy homework' way and we keep them by the dining table to encourage the pick up and discussion of a card at meal times.

Fantastic learning resources to improve vocabulary.
These are the new 11+ Vocabulary flash cards which arrived well packaged as expected. The flashcards come inside a small box that is bright and clear. The box tells me everything I need to know about these which is; these are made by CGP, these are for GL and CEM, they are the 11+ Vocabulary, they are for ages 8 to 9, there are 200 flashcards which have the word on the front, definitions on the back as well as the synonyms and antonyms. Opening the box, I can see all the cards are neatly inside and ordered alphabetically (each letter having a matching colour), with the very first card being about how to use these. There is a link on this card to a website, where ideas for games and activities can be found for these cards. As suggested, the main word is written largely and clearly on the front, with a plain white background so the word is very visible. The back of each card starts with what type of word it is (adjective, verb etc) and the definition. There is a sentence that uses the word, for added clarity. Then depending on what the word is, it will have the synonym or antonym. My daughter is 8 and is currently in year 3. When these arrived, she instantly recognised the CGP logo. I have asked her teacher about these and this is what I know from her; these are 200 high frequency words that my daughter should be able to read, write, spell and know the definition of by the end of year 4. We have been using these cards in a way where I will take one from the front and ask her to read it and quiz her about the definition and the types of word it is. These are fantastic quality cards with a wide range of everyday words. Highly recommended and I will definitely be continuing to use these.

Great For Learning At Home, Regardless Of What You May Think About The 11+ System
These cards are great if you want to do some extra learning at home, regardless of what your opinions are about the actual 11+ system. Whether you are for or against it, surely growing your child's vocabulary is a good thing. These cards were smaller than I was expecting but in actual fact are a good size for smaller hands.I got the Vocabulary pack and I counted that there are 199 cards, plus you get the 1 cover card (making the advertised 200) and on each card is a main word and then on the reverse is the information about that word. Cards are also colour coded so you can work on a batches if you so wish.If we look at the card with the word "Wrapped" as an example (please see my photo for the layout), you'll see that on the flip side of the card is the information about the word. I think the layout is great and also like the use of examples. So we are very pleased with these and have found them to be very.... "Useful : Helpful, Handy, Practical" :)

My 6 year old seemed to know most of them
Have been using this set of cards with my 6 year old, who does have a a slightly big set of vocab for his age.I found he was more than familiar with many of the words so it instead turned out to be better way for him trying to spell the different words. It's a great way to brush up on vocabulary as opposed to learn new words for the selected age range as all children's capabilities are at a different level. All in all I do like how the cards are laid out but it could have easily been bit more interactive whilst being educational making it more challenging but fun.So in hindsight I will use it with my 3 year old as he gets to a more suited age for it.

Versatile if a little simple for the designated age range
This is a cuboid full of 200 well made flashcards. They are designed for ages 8-9 and for GL and CEM 11+ school entry examinations.A word appears on the front. Synonyms and antonyms, clear definitions and examples inserted in sentences are on the back together with its linguistic class (eg adjective, adverb etc)I did find these words a little simple and learning to spell these should not present a problem to the more advanced pupil in this age range. However, lots of games can be devised to play and enjoy these cards including ‘snap’ - when two words beginning with the same letter are laid on top of each other. How about creating a story using a set of words allocated to you?

Stimulating and well made
These cards have a single word on one side and on the reverse, it contains a definition as well as a few synonyms and antonyms, with examples of how to use them.My daughter likes for the both of us to try and work through a few - and sometimes they're actually quite difficult for an adult, where you know the word and how it's used but hard to define! The cards themselves are quite sturdy and have the feel of an adult card set, albeit shaped differently and a bit smaller. They're also colour-coded for difficulty. These cards are easy to use in a quick pick up and play game and good for a child of any ability.
