POV - tool instead of a weapon
I've read all the reviews of this knife and most of them appear to be written by people with implied intent to use this knife as a weapon. In contrast, my review is from the POV of this knife as a tool. Some reviews criticized the plastic sheath because it held the knife too tightly; however, from my POV, this is a plus. The last thing I want is the knife falling out of the sheath hurting my co-worker below. The sheath is good, hard, rigid plastic that shouldn't crack. The clip holds tightly on my wide belt. I've never carried a knife in my boot. How would I get to the knife while working on a ladder? Reach down to my boot? The knife can be easily pulled from the sheath with one hand if you use your thumb to spread the slot at the top of sheath. Leather sheaths by contrast will loosen and tend to flop around while working. In short, I like the plastic sheath. The knife itself is wide, strong steel and will not break in normal use. The handle has good grip and balance with ridges for your thumb at the hilt. I paid $20 which is affordable for a working person and I don't have to worry too much about losing the knife. Please don't tell me to spend $150 on a Benchmade knife.Lastly, if you need a weapon, get gun. If you need a working knife, I recommend this Smith & Wesson SWHRT1 HRT Tactical Boot Knife.

Sharp, solid, deadly
This is a good everyday carry knife. I didn't get the first one because someone at the post office ripped the package open and stole my item. Fortunately Amazon is great about shipping out a new item under that circumstance. I received the replacement, it was not hair shaving sharp, so I used the Samurai shark (don't laugh, it a great sharpener,) to sharpen it. I was worried that the blade wasn't sharpened to hair shaving sharp level. I found out differently when I tied a paracord lanyard to it. I was testing the lanyard when the blade slipped out of the sheath, barely skimmed my thumb and cut it open pretty deep-past the first layer of skin, almost to the meat.I bandaged the wound to stop the bleeding, took the bandage off, clean up the wound a little bit and crazy glued it shut. Long story short that boot knife is very sharp now.Aside from the sharpness its a nice heavy blade. It doesn't feel light or cheap. The sheath must of already been broken in because the blade came right out. I crazy glue part of it so the knife wasn't so loose. The sheath and blade ride nicely on my belt. Overall a great boot knife. Its longer than Amazon said it is. That is not a criticism, but an observation.

MADE IN CHINA
Smith and Wesson are killing their reputation by selling items made in China. The sheath is plastic and useless for a boot knife since the entire thing comes out when pulling. It does not keep an edge very well and it's too heavy for its size. My suggestion is move on and get something better for a bit more money.

Without the Smith &Wesson name it wouldn't rate as high IMO
Three stars because it is not as described and that almost always knocks a star off of the rating- unless it is better than described. Most people giving it a generous five stars are using it as a tool, not as a tactical boot knife, as it is described because it does not make a good tactical knife or boot knife. I do agree with everyone saying that the sheath is fine, the. knife fits in it like a hand in a glove,as it should. It is a decent fixed blade knife but the handle is too slippery for it to be a good tactical knife and the bulk and weight and balance are not right for it to be a good boot knife. It is okay. Knives are something where you generally get what you pay for so the name Smith & Wesson doesn't mean much - the same goes for Benchmade one reviewer was griping about because of the price, but if you go and look for a tactical boot knife on YouTube you will see video of some pricey knives - and that you get what you pay for as with most things. Benchmade knives tend to go up in value as they age as do some others that are collectable and made by recognizable names but people shopping for self-defense products often forget S&W is known for their guns, not their knives. This one is a three star knife because it is okay, but it is really nothing extraordinary and it is not a good tactical boot knife as it is described

having trouble wondering why so many bad reviews on this product
I ordered this item about a week ago and received it earlier today and honestly I have trouble thinking of bad things to say about this knife and its apparently infamous sheath that according to other reviews is cheap, impossible to remove the knife from, and as I believe one customer stated a piece of crap made in china. the sheath that comes with this knife is meant to be a quick draw style sheath and the knife itself is not meant to be a utility knife its a tactical knife. The knife was very hard to remove from the sheath the first time I tried but throughout the day and removing it more and more it became comfortable and quick to remove as well as feeling secure at all other times. the removable belt clip that attaches to the back of the sheath has so far been strong and secure and has only once come free of the sheath when I didn't want it to and it happened to be while I was trying to remove the KNIFE AND SHEATH at once to take the hole package off of my belt which i see as a good thing seeing how strong the clip itself is. i couldn't see this knife being used as a boot knife in a comfortable manner unless a modification was made to the sheath by removing the belt clip and affixing one ore two straps to the sheath itself and that's why I rated this product at four stars seeing as its advertised as a boot knife and I don't believe it would function well as one. All in all very satisfied with my purchase

A knife is of no use if.....
I will just echo much of what "The Shepard" said about the knife. It's almost impossible to remove it from the sheath without playing tug of war with yourself. And to make a strange situation even more strange, the belt/boot clip that is an integral part of the sheath is so weak that it is useless for holding the knife in any location.....which is why I no longer own this knife. Rideing my motorcycle today, the knife fell away somewhere on I40. I don't miss it....Lynn Stubblefield
