This is not Pirates. It has some similarities, but revolves too much around trade. Example, you can start out playing the Spanish, seize and completely plunder Port Royal and by the next day Port Royal is rebuilt and you make less gold than if you just traded with Port Royal. The battle mechanism is cumbersome, at best. You can have a fleet of ships but only ONE ship can participate in combat at time. The only reason to even amass a fleet of ships to have more extensive trade routes. Piracy is not encouraged or even made fun with this game. Do not recommend as a comparison to Pirates but its fine if you want to play a Caribbean trading game. Would be nice if they gave indicators what the trade good icons meant without having to look them up all the time. The trading is not that intuitive.
