Do you pronounce these pair of words as if they sound the same? : Face and phase, voice and boys, heat and hit, ice and eyes, yes and Jess, off and of, peace and peas, they and day, this and these, to name just a few? Get this book and you will understand why they should sound different as you learn the different sounds they are made of. As a native Spanish speaker, I have struggled with those and other words that, to me, sounded the same. I'm really impressed with this book. At last, after years of not being able to put my finger on what exactly was different about each word, now I know! The book also teaches you about the rhythm of English, which is created by a combination of stress patterns and intonation patters. I didn't know that languages can be syllable timed or stress timed. English is a stressed timed language and Spanish is a syllable timed language. Native speakers of any language tend to use the rhythm of their first language when speaking a second language. I am finding it very interesting and I can now understand why people sounds so different when they speak a language that it is not their native language. I really recommend this book if you are serious about learning English pronunciation.

This book is ideal for English teachers and for students alike. It gives clear guidance on how to pronounce each English sound and there are accompanying audios and videos, which are downloadable from the publisher's website. It also includes a diagnostic quiz and "The Common Mistakes" sections are particularly useful for correcting errors and improving your accent. I find this book easy to teach from and my students love it too.
