Smooth but Surprising: Hydro-Stone Plaster for Candle Vessel Molds
I used Hydro-Stone Plaster for casting candle vessel molds and found it to be incredibly smooth, which made for an excellent finish on my projects. However, it's worth noting that the plaster isn't as white as I had expected. In fact, some pieces had a pink hue after drying. Despite this unexpected coloration, the product still works well for my needs and I will purchase again. It came packaged in a bag and then a box - easy to store in between uses.

The product is good, however…
The product is good and so far liking working with Hydrostone. However, I was able to buy Hydrostone (this exact product) from Artistic Industries. On their website, it is priced at $61 + free shipping. The one I buy from Amazon was $66. I’ll take a $5 save any day :)

so far so good
I have no experience with casting whatsoever, so I ordered a 10lb bag to try it out in my silicone coaster molds. I originally wanted to order hydrocal, but this one was recommended for me instead. I cannot buy this locally. The package arrived intact—no problems there. The amount was as I ordered—10lbs. There is no description on how to use this product on the package. Mixing instructions took a while to find online, but it seems 1 part water : 3 parts hydrocal by weight does the trick. I added a little more water because I needed it to be less viscous (even though people do state that this may compromise the final quality of a product). I also added acrylic paint for color. (Mix it into water for uniform color). This medium sets rather quickly, but does give you enough time to shake it to get rid of bubbles. It also levels off by itself—a nice bonus. It only took me about an hour in order to de-mold and another 24hours or so for it to dry out completely. I also used 200/400/800 grit sandpaper to sand all the rough edges and washed off the dust with water (again, you need to make sure it dries out completely after that). The products look beautiful.Again, I have NO experience with this product, so I have no idea whether what I did was right or wrong, but I am sticking with this method for now.I then tried to order this product from another vendor, and get it shipped. Because of the weight, the original 50lb product (which cost ~$30 on the vendor website) incurred another $40 shipment fee. To tell you the truth, even if I pay more for it on Amazon, I think it is just easier to order here because you know exactly what you are getting (with no surprise delays or adjustment to shipment price as I had experienced with that particular vendor). If you can get this product locally, this is your cheapest option, but not everyone is so lucky.
