Reliable B550 Board with Great VRMs and Features for the Price
I’ve been running the MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK since April 2024 in a mid-range gaming and productivity rig, and it's been an excellent experience all around.Setup & BIOSBooted up with a Ryzen 7 5800X and 32GB (2x16) of G.Skill DDR4-3600 without any hiccups.BIOS was easy to navigate, with MSI’s Click BIOS offering a clean layout and decent fan control.Flashing BIOS was painless using the Flashback button — no CPU required, which is a huge bonus if you're planning to future-proof or use an older BIOS chip. MSI also keeps BIOS updates frequent, which is reassuring for long-term support (especially on AM4, even late in its lifecycle).Connectivity & I/ORear I/O is generous for the price. You're getting:-2.5G LAN (Realtek) — big upgrade over standard gigabit-Plenty of USB ports (including USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A and Type-C)-Optical S/PDIF out — rare at this tier-6x SATA and 2x M.2 slots (top M.2 supports PCIe Gen 4, bottom is Gen 3)It doesn’t include built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but I knew that going in and added a PCIe Wi-Fi 6 card. Easy enough fix.VRMs, Cooling & PerformanceOne of this board’s standout features is its VRM design — the 10+2+1 phase layout with decent heatsinking keeps things cool even under heavy loads.I’ve done moderate overclocking (PBO and curve optimizer tweaks) and haven’t seen VRM temps go over 65°C, even with sustained multicore loads.Plenty of fan headers and good PWM control in BIOS or via MSI Center (if you use it — not everyone likes it).AudioComes with Realtek ALC1200 codec. Not “audiophile-grade,” but more than enough for casual gaming and media. I do appreciate the clean signal with no background hiss when using my headphones directly through the rear jack.Build QualityThe board feels sturdy — reinforced PCIe slot for your GPU, metal heatsinks with decent mass, and a well-labeled layout. No flex, no cheap-feeling components. M.2 shields are a nice touch too, though they’re not the thickest aroundMinor Issues-No built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, so factor that in--

Really good value
OK so it's not the best 500 series board out there but the 5 star rating is simply because of value for what's included - two M.2 slots for your NVME drives, Wifi, a USB-C header (check your case has a USB-C port - if not just leave it unplugged), two 3 pin RGB headers, and two 4 pin RGB headers,.Oh and it has 5 fan headers, which would be enough for most people I would think. And while I have only installed low power CPU's like 3600 and 5600 on it, according to Hardware Unboxed it also handles more powerful chips surprisingly well considering how light it looks. Superb board!I should also add that I only installed NVME drives in this board, no SATA SSD's so I can't speak for how well placed the SATA headers are if you had a long graphics card installed, but just from looking at it I'm guessing you would be fine, especially as they are side mounted and not front mounted like a different motherboard I recently worked with, which was a pain
