Outstanding
What a steal! I feel like I got thousands of dollars worth of counseling and guidance for only a couple of dollars. This book is exactly what I needed and I didn’t know how much I needed it. While some of it is difficult to stomach, it is necessary for rock-solid, godly parenting. Such good, reliable, and relevant information, structured in an easy-to-use, helpful format. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, teacher, or church volunteer, this is a valuable resource for raising and being around children. I am grateful for the opportunity to have read it and plan to share it.

Practical Advice
This book was a genuine surprise to me. Being long past the stage of parenting small children or teenagers, I didn't expect to find it particularly interesting--WRONG. Goff and Trevathan are two counselors with over 75 years of combined experience working with children. It shows. Their wise, common sense advice about the issues modern moms and dads face is refreshingly honest and practical. The book is divided into three sections. The first, "Modern Parents" deals with the topics that are frequently discussed in their day-to-day counseling sessions (they are part of a counseling ministry called Daystar). It includes technology, entitlement, respect, anxiety and depression, eating disorders and more. If your children grew up before the ready availability of cell phones, personal computers and social media (mine did) this will be an eye opener in understanding what young people and their parents deal with today. The second section introduces the idea of "Vintage Values." Values such as compassion, gratitude, kindness, patience (sounds a lot like the fruit of the spirit, doesn't it). Under each value the authors talk about what these values look like in teenagers and younger children and how to instill them in both age groups. The final section is entitled "Timeless Truths." Here you will find some comfort in contemplating Who it is that enables us to parent, especially in difficult times. At the end of each chapter in the first two sections there are useful ideas and suggestions for activities for families that will help them experience and reinforce the ideas discussed.

A veritable treasure trove of help for parents
This book was a veritable treasure trove of information and practical help for parents. My goodness, it was packed with facts and statistics, stories from their 75+ years of combined experience, and both big-picture and on the ground advice. The first part was a bit daunting (disturbing, even), and I could feel myself growing anxious at times. But it was information I needed. We cannot stick our heads in the sand and pretend these dangers don’t exist. Remaining in the ignorance and false security of “my kid would never” is exactly how parents get blindsided and caught unprepared.I was impressed with the level and quantity of advice in the second part. Each of the nine chapters contained thorough a definition and explanation of its respective value and offered tips for instilling it in both children and teens. (Which is super helpful for parents in different stages of raising children.)I had a few minor complaints -- some of the family suggestions were a bit hokey, and I didn’t always see the relevance of the anecdotes. But overall, I would definitely recommend Modern Parents, Vintage Values as a valuable resource for anyone raising kids today.** I received a complimentary copy to review. A positive review was not required.

Change your kids life for the better
As two professional counselors in Nasvhille, Trevathan and Goff hear about ALL THE STRUGGLES facing parents today.I often wonder if I’m doing enough. Doing it right. Whether we’re making the right decisions or not. But Modern Parents, Vintage Values comes alongside you. It gives you help with thinking through some of those “big issues” – technology, disrespect, entitlement, substance abuse, anxiety, depression, etc. Whether your child is a toddler or a teenager (or anywhere in between!), Goff and Trevathan will give gentle guidance for you the parent to not only parent your child but also examine where you maybe need to work on those things yourself as well! Especially in the technology chapter, I felt the conviction to better parent my tech so daughter sees me living out the same boundaries I ask of her.The second half of the book focuses on values to help build in your child. With real-life examples, Goff and Trevathan shed light on how we should think about the values we instill in our child. Each chapter ends with a Sunday Roadmap. It’s a simple idea that reminds us of how to build any of these values into the fabric of our families. Reading this book makes you feel like you have a helpful guide walking you down this path.If you need a little encouragement on your parenting journey, this is a book for you! Modern Parents, Vintage Values will walk alongside you, and help build confidence in the way you approach your parenting. This book will help you build foundational values into your children that will change their lives for the better.I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This review is my own, honest opinion.
